EV Routing For Apple Maps Now Available Via Carplay & SYNC in Mach-E

New today! Apple released EV Maps Routing with iOS 15.4. Apple Maps EV Routing supports planning your long electric vehicle journeys via CarPlay in your Mustang Mach-E. Apple Maps will use your iPhone to read vehicle and battery data when connected to CarPlay and assist you on your journey by adding chargers into your trip as necessary.

This feature is available on all 2022 Model Year Mustang Mach-E and 2021 Model Year Mustang Mach-E with updated SYNC software. Learn more about the feature and confirm if you have the applicable SYNC software version here.

I just tried this in mine as I have the lowest SYNC version that supports it, and DAMN is it great to have. Again, the only issue I have with Ford Navigation is that it doesn’t reliably route me to the last mile of my destination (sometimes with very weird consequences), so I typically use only CarPlay. That’s fine on shorter trips, but then I have to manually factor in charging stops. Well, not anymore!

It’s missing a few features like selecting minimum charge rates at stations, seeing station availability, etc., but it did choose almost exclusively EA stations along the routes it gave me to a few various places in testing. When you start the directions, Siri does her normal spiel and then adds, “In approximately two hours and thirty minutes, you will need to stop to charge in <wherever>.” That’s a nice little feature.

I’m super-happy with this, especially for it to work “out of the box” with the recent 15.4 drop. Good on you, Ford, and thank you!


EDITED TO ADD: When I came back in from the garage after linking Apple Maps on my iPhone to the Mach-E, I went back upstairs to my “office.” I brought-up Maps on my iPad, and asked for a set of directions there. Maps on my iPad now also knew about the Mach-E and gave me the appropriate routing/charging directions, so if I wanted to plan out a route on a larger screen than the phone or CarPlay, it’s all available automagically in Apple Maps on my iPad as well. Home run!

First we'd need Apple Maps to exist on our phones.

But yeah, Google Maps support would be nice.

A similar feature already exists on Google maps, but only for vehicles that have native (built in) Google maps. I am just wondering out loud if Ford is already working with Google to bring this same functionality to the Android auto version of the Google maps.

Hey, my Sync Software version is "--" since November 2021 because your update PowerUp 1.7.1 screwed up my car.

When do you plan on releasing the fix that was promised last month to us and keeps behind pushed?

Great question @Ford Motor Company ! There are THOUSANDS of pre-July 2021 Mach E's that have not been able to receive an OTA update since November 2021. We were promised the company would have a fix to this ridiculous error since January. Want to be a real 21st century customer friendly company? Communicate with the people who've paid you millions for these vehicles about what's going on and fix the damn problem already!!!

Has anyone noticed CarPlay giving a notification of low charge whenever you charge at 90% or above? Very peculiar bug that started after the 2.3 OTA- but assuming it's an Apple bug.

I read Ford is going to use the same magical black box used for order placement fulfillment for OTA updates. Some will get to cut the line and get them right away. Others will wait a year or so.

Google Maps has the capability for EV route planning and it is used in cars like the Polestar 2 for its route planning. Ford and Google both announced they were working together on future products. I'm hoping this means this feature will be coming to Android Auto soon.

I have both, but prefer Android Auto. Also... is there a way to get a full screen Android Auto feature?

Basically in 2023 (according to initial reports) Sync will just run Android Natively, like in the polestar. There will be no android auto because Google Maps and Google Assistant are built in.

Sounds great to me! Although, that probably means a subscription fee, since both Google maps and Assistant rely on cloud services so heavily.

Hopefully Google also incorporates this into Android Auto as well, so we can use it on our cars though ?

Yes, same here. I saw Apple Map notifications about low charge at times even though the car isn’t low in charge. But I never figured out exactly when. But now that I think about it, those notification likely does coincide with the occasional times when my car was over 90%.

I look forward to seeing the future OS but I really hope that there is still an option to have CarPlay open in a window, just like it does now with Sync 4A. I am not a fan of the Android Auto interface and don't use those Google services.

I hope so, I've gone from never using CarPlay when it was wired in my old car, to loving it since its wireless and so seamless!
