Ok, for those in the SF Bay Area, I did another test, this time on the 880 Express Lane going northbound in Fremont. Based on my account activity, it seems like it accepted the CAV transponder in the black area so I didn't get charged for being in the Express Lane (>3 people). I wonder if Dumbarton Bridge's readers are lower and therefore they can't read it.

I put my E-ZPass on the grated area of the windshield next to the mirror. The slow lanes register it but I don't think high speed does. I was charged full rate on my tolls. I don't have plates on yet as it's still new and being transferred. NY EZ does not look to offer exterior tags. What about sticking it to the front corner of the sunroof?
I took my larger size NY EZ-Pass out of another vehicle and held it against the "black dot" area as I drove under the readers at speed. The reader worked fine in both directions of the trip (I checked my account later to confirm). NY eliminated all of the cash/low speed toll booths on the Thruway last year so high speed is all I have to test.

Still waiting for the green EZ-Pass for my MME (discount for EV).

I put my ezpass transponder in the middle of the black area on the passenger side, and it reads fine at >60mph in the express lanes on the Atlantic City Expressway, NJ Turnpike, and Pennsylvania Turnpike. Checked my ezpass account to be sure, and it read the transponder not my license plate.

The black dotted area on the windshield next to the rear view mirror is the place to put your IPASS / EZ Pass. I put my IPASS there and it worked fine going through the toll booth. Tried a couple of times earlier just holding it up to the windshield (because I was not sure where to mount it)and that did not work. Probably for the reasons mentioned above.

IL iPass user here. Today I noticed the iPass site has acknowledged that some vehicles need a transponder mounted behind the license plate, rather than inside the windshield. They provide instructions on how to get and mount such a transponder. Here are 2 links...
The discussion page with a BROKEN link to a list of vehicles they know needs this: https://www.illinoistollway.com/doc...2-16.pdf/af71b8ae-2160-4554-a51e-bc515230b4bf
The [working] link to the list of vehicles they know need this (MME is not listed–yet):
https://www.illinoistollway.com/doc...LIST.pdf/d2a92e6f-9549-422a-b9f4-e90edb291b36
I plan to call iPass to see if the MME is on their radar yet (so to speak) for this issue.

I knew about the license plate transponder too but my windshield transponder works fine placed in the black shaded area next to rear view mirror. This area doesn't have the coating the rest of the windshield does. Bottom line is that you don't need the license plate transponder unless you want one as your windshield transponder works fine if placed in the correct area. I was on the toll road last week and it worked perfectly. You will need two of the adhesive strips that mount on the windshield and hold the transponder to the windshield.

Thanks for this. I've heard others say this about other transponders. Good to hear it works for your IL iPass. Before mounting, I think I will try holding it in that location as I drive by the next toll station. I've tried holding it in various [other] locations with usually no luck, so I have sometimes just held it out the window. Also, I think I've come a cross a couple of instances where the readers weren't working at all for anybody (system down).

It will work. Mount it down from top of windshield 1” to 2” ( better) as long as it stays within that blackened region.

It will work from the dotted area. My toll transponder and radar detector both work fine from there only.

@prius2pony I took a trip from DC to MN over Memorial Day weekend. Stopped to pick up my mom in the northern suburbs of Chicago. My EZ-Pass is mounted in the black dot area on the passenger side of the windshield. No problems with any tolls on this entire trip which included a couple of runs through the Chicago area. All tolls were charged to the EZ-Pass (not my license plate) - I confirmed this by looking at the activity on my account.

someone from Texas said they went to the tolltag "store" and a person brought out a handheld scanner to determine the best place for the tag. it was to the left or right of the rearview mirror in the black spot.

Someone else has posted that a ford engineer has confirmed this location
I went to toll tag store in Plano TX just now and the lady came out with handheld scanner and confirmed that it doesn't read under the mirror but read it on the black shaded part.

I'm 4000 miles in, I've held the transponder in every area and it still hasn't worked for me lol. I just need to stop by EZ Pass for a newer one. I tested it in our GMC and it still works fine.

Mine's mounted around the black dotted area to the right of the windshield. Have rolled through NJ ezpass around 5 times. Yesterday it didn't pick it up (toll unpaid)

Might just place it in the vent area when approaching tolls if it continue to have this issue.

Thank you for this information. I couldn’t get my EZ-Pass to work with the Ohio Turnpike scanners while in my Mach-E. I’m looking forward to trying this on an upcoming trip to Michigan.

Yes. this info has been stated several times earlier in the thread

Did you put it in the middle of the black dotted area?
