Ford Navigation problems

Sorry to post mainly when I have problems, but my wife no longer wants to take road trips in our Mach-E! So I need to reassure her somehow. We were already disappointed by GOM behavior on our first trip but at least I now understood and accounted for that. The trip from home went well.

1) On the return, we finished at a charging stop off I5, and I entered a route to home. Even though I knew it would not make it without an interim charging stop (even the GOM range was 3 miles less than the distance home), Ford Nav would not include an interim charging stop! I tried to add one by looking for chargers, but that didn't work well. So I used PlugShare to find some fast chargers on the route, then went back to Ford Nav to find and add it to the route. Started driving and after a minute or two, it warned me I needed to add a charging stop! I closed that dialog, pulled onto the highway, and then noticed my added charging stop was gone! I pulled into an I5 rest area later to reprogram it, but found free charging at about 40KW so let it charge until I could get home. How can I do this better the next time?

2) On the outbound trip I programmed the Ford Nav, then opened Google Maps on my phone for a second route map. This time it stopped the Ford Nav, so I had to reprogram it. Can only one map program run (using CarPlay)? I thought I had both running before.

Thanks for any help you can offer - otherwise I'll be flying or taking our truck for the next trip!

When I used to use the Ford navigation I would make any charging stop the one and only destination.

Save all of the charging points from my ABRP plan as favorites before leaving on the trip. Then hop from one charger to the next using my favorites, then at the last charger put in the true final destination.

1) Plan your trip with ABRP, verify each location in PlugShare in advance and day of trip.

The car has a built in navigation??? That’s so 2020

The charger routing of the built in nav is a “connected service” so perhaps the car had bad reception when you first input the destination. And when it got better data connection it figured it out and asked you to add a charge stop.

You can also use Apple Maps EV routing linked to the car with CarPlay. The car will communicate charge level and efficiency with the phone and plan charge stops as needed. It tends to be very conservative though and want you to charge before it’s very low.

You cannot use the built in nav and nav in CarPlay/Android auto at the same time. One or the other. But you can use multiple navs at the same time within CarPlay/AA. Eg Apple Maps + Waze.

It's possible that I had poor reception where I was. But it would have been great if it told me that as it otherwise indicated it had sufficient charge to get me home.

I will use ABRP or Apple Maps next time, if my wife agrees to try again. I thought it was best to use the Ford Nav to pre-condition the batteries for charging, but will see how it works without that.

The “greater problem” is confidence. Yes, you had a problem with Ford Nav, but that caused the greater problem of confidence loss. I have a similar marriage to yours, maybe, and found that the key to successful road trips was giving My Love the app she already has confidence in: Apple Maps. Keeping that part of the experience familiar is really important.

Um, it gets hot in the Central Valley? And chilly in the winter? I'm pretty sure I heard the fans come on as we approached San Luis Obispo, which has a great Tesla Supercharger site at the Public Market.
