Yes, range is set based on route.
Makes sense - I'm assuming it won't read from whatever nav app you use on AA or CarPlay. That would be a nice integration, I think.

Nope, Apple Maps does it’s own calculation.

Correct, I think the Ford Nav locally calculates the route and is sent to the server, the server crunches how much energy it will take based on speed, elevation, weather conditions, and your driver history, and then sends an update back to the car if the range estimate will be significantly different than currently displayed. There is a "threshold" situation where if the range isn't much different, it won't update, only if there's a significant difference. Such as if you normally drive ~50 mph in a city environment and then take a road trip where you drive ~75 mph. Conversely if you drive fast all the time, you won't really seen an update unless you take a "slow" route. Significant temperature change was also another trigger.
ah ok, so it's related to running the internal NAV, and would always result in a pop-up message like this?

i thought somehow this meant that all GOM updates were interacting with the server.

I'm wondering if this applies to my Mach E only or if it applies to my Lightning as well?

Just my guess….they’re unrelated. The FordPass message implied that its changes are in effect and contrasted them to the “in-vehicle range calculation.”
Maybe.

I'm suspecting both server-side and vehicular changes are needed.

It clearly is a server side feature. We saw this repeatedly on our cross-country trip pulling a trailer behind our Lightning. We would have one range estimate when we pull out from a charger and then down the road it would be adjusted.

However, there may be something on the vehicle side that is also involved in this implementation. Since it was tested first with Early Access participants, we may have had that software on the truck already.

Another bit of uncertainty: Does it require PowerUp 4.2.6 to take effect?

If you check out the description of 4.2.6, it sounds like this range algorithm adjustment is part of it.

Yeah I'm not 100% sure on whether you'll need 4.2.6 or if the previous 3.6.2 powertrain update is sufficient. It seems mostly server side so it might work with the old software. I tried to mess around with it already and couldn't get a range correction, so I'm not sure if it's actually active or not (I have all latest software). They turned it on for F150 Lightning too, so if you wanted to go tow your trailer to test it Mark...

I've been running 4.2.6 for about a week now and got the message but so far it doesn't seem to be active on my car.

Attaching a trailer to my Lightning has always resulted in a range adjustment accompanied by a alert.

The lightning was programmed this way since towing is common with the truck. As soon as you tell it a trailer is connected, it would change to towing calculation in the internal computer.
