Or worse, there could have been a headline about a Mach-E's hood flying off the highway, right next to the headline regarding a Model Y's airborne roof.

So glad to hear that nothing of that sort actually happened!
Hey! C'mon, the Tesla is still street Legal! Nothing in the statute's say anything about a roof latch! Completely legal?

You are saying conflicting things in different posts. At first you admit it might not have been closed tightly. Then you unequivocally say it was closed.
The car gives out strong warnings if it wasn't closed properly.

Regardless of whether OP properly closed the frunk, it's the car's fault: either the frunk status sensor does not function correctly, or the frunk opened spontaneously on highway.

Wonder if it's possible that the release can be accidentally triggered when moving around? I'd assume if it wasn't fully closed in the first instance there would be a message to that effect, similar to the one you got. Ford is not exactly a stranger to hoods.

No. You can only pull the release when the driver door is open. Otherwise it's physically blocked.

Well the sensor worked at the same time I noted the hood pop up about an inch.

I considered this, however looking at the placement of my left food and the arrangement of the release, I don't think that happened.

Potential theories:

1. It was cold yesterday and warm today, expansion of one or more components caused the first latch to release.

2. There was some blockage or foreign object that interfered with proper latch.. latching

3. Mechanical failure of the mechanism itself

4. Mechanical failure of something in the release linkage

5. Not sure if there is an electrical release, but if there was, some failure in that system.

6. Small child in frunk pushing the release button.

More likely the fob Frunk release button was pushed. Oh wait ....

An odd occurrence snd hopefully a one and done.

Luckily they require a secondary latch like any hood (which people hate because they need to pull the lever twice).
What? I love that...Its easier to pull the leaver twice than to find the hood latch release. My Cayman has a great, useful frunk but I have to find the leaver every time. It really isn't hard though. The Cayman also will electronically un latch by hovering your hand over the car near the frunk or with the key fob so theres an advantage there.

I know there was a lot of talk about it, but is there an electric release that just hasn't been turned on yet? For troubleshooting it would be interesting to see if that could have anything to do with it.

As near as I can tell, there is. The internal frunk emergency release appears to use that system too, and it is also disabled. Hence the dividers. Interesting idea you have there.
