They allocated 50,000 in the FIRST year because they had no idea how popular it would be and only wanted to commit to that many batteries. I'm pretty sure they are planning a lot higher production now, pending battery availability
I'd assume Ford would draw on historical numbers to some degree regarding strategy. ICE Mustangs aren't the volume sellers, but great for branding and cachet. The 150s will make a splash, and then maybe the Escape PHEV or eventually as an BEV as more of the mass market. Not sure Ford and VW match up, but that's not really my lane.

Where are you getting that information? From what I recall they aren’t going to make that many F150 lightenings next year.
Just a guess, since the F150 is their best selling vehicle. I figured they'd make as many as possible.

Yes, the Mach E was limited to 50k in the first year. It's possible they increase production numbers in the coming years.

Actually seems pretty low volume if this is correct:

" Ford already has over 44,000 reservations for this all-electric F-150 and expects to produce about 80,000 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning models a year. "

Nope, but I don't recall where you said US only? Norway is a country too. The situation is the same in Switzerland and a few other EU.

Obviously much higher than the US but to say they are only selling to early adopters when they are pushing out around 200K cars a quarter is pretty silly.
Well, according to these figures:
https://www.goodcarbadcar.net/tesla-us-sales-figures/
Tesla has sold 200k cars for a few quarters. Total sales since 2015 is equal to 1 good year of F-150 sales. They have yet to crack 2% market share.
Norway is a small country that has high EV adoption rate. The numbers is the chart you posted are equal to a good month in a decent sized US metro area for one of the legacy automakers.
Like it or not, EVs are still an early adopter niche product in the largest market in the world.

Last I heard reservations are over 100k for the Lightning.

Yes of course it's still early, but it's also rapidly accelerating now compared to even 2018, 2019, 2020.

Will probably take a few years to match production for some of the legacy autos but with the way things are ramping up I'm sure it'll happen. They are adding 2 new huge factories this year which will probably double or triple overall production numbers as well.

Not trying to toot the Tesla horn but they are the only really "large" scale EV producer at the moment. They will make more 3s and Ys in 90 days than Ford will make all 2021 Mustang Mach-Es and all 2022 F150 Lightnings in a year

Once the ID.4 gets going VW will probably catch up or pass depending on how it's received in the US

Yeah, that's part/most of my point. The U.S. is starting the push for mass adoption. Ford would do well to position themselves top of mind for people considering/making the switch to an EV. Every hockey and basketball fan watching the playoffs now knows about the ID4. How many of them know Ford has/will have serious entries in the EV market?

VW has done a good job with marketing for the ID.4 for sure. I even saw a big event at a local mall here where you should just show up and drive an ID.4. Always getting ads for it on Facebook also.

On the other hand when I test drove a MME back in May I had to get special approval to take the car for 30 minutes since the dealership said 15 minutes was a normal test drive.

If you have driven an ID4 they you would know they need all the help they can get to sell those things.
I liked it. It's no Mustang, but I found it very comfortable, practical and pleasant to drive. I think there's a good market for a car like the ID.4.

Drive an id4 and you'll see why VW is running so many ads. It hasn't won a single reviewer's praise outside of "it's cheaper". Ford has so much buzz about the MME that they don't need to spend money on advertising it at this point.

Yesterday I stopped at an O'Reilly auto parts in a rural town where I live. ALL of the employees and two customers came out of the store to greet me and ask to see the car. No paid commercials can get that kind of excitement about a vehicle.

Besides, I want Ford to be profitable so they can pay dividends on the stock I own.

I'm charging next to an ID4 right now, the first I've seen outside of images online or ads. It looks way better in person than in images - much like the Mach E. The owner loved it and was getting 300 miles per charge.

When my wife's current lease is up in a couple months we'll definitely take it for a test drive. There's something to be said about it being less advanced/complicated than the Mach E or Tesla. My wife for one can pretty much only turn the Mach E on and drive. The settings, 1PD, and drive modes are completely overwhelming for her, so the ID4 may be the best option.

Some car people are aware of the MME, and most if not all EV people are aware of it. I'm not sure that extends to the general public. There have been numerous posts here about passers by asking where the engine is, or where do you put gas in it, when seeing Mach-Es in the wild. Advertising is about more than just selling. It's also about staying top of mind. Apple still advertises iPhones. How many people in the US today would you say don't know what an iPhone is?

I found the weird gear shifter in the id4 to be awkward, but I'm sure it's easy enough to get used to. And the control screen had some of the quirks from my Tiguan... But those are also easy enough to get used to. It's a really good starter EV, so is the Nissan Leaf which doesn't get enough credit these days, despite it's longevity in the market.
