I just picked up my '23 GTPE last night. I put about 15 miles on it getting home and that was it. Today I had to run some errands so I am up to about 125 miles on the car in total. I figured I should try charging it a bit before I drive the 60 miles to work tomorrow morning, so I wiped out the handy Ford portable charger that came with it. Yes, I'm charging on 120V so I know it's a trickle charge (my L2 is sitting in the garage to be installed shortly), but I am wondering if the loud hum that the car is emitting while charging is normal?

Obviously, at 125 miles, I have not tried using any other charger and I have never been around an EV before, so I don't know if this is normal. I ran a quick search, but didn't find any other threads on this in my 30 sec of research. Figured it's quicker and easier if someone can just say "yes, they always make noise when charging" or "no, they should be silent when charging"....

thanks!

The hum is normal. Usually it’s the sound of the coolant pump running. If it’s really hot out the fans will also kick in and that can get loud.

Wow. That hum is annoying as all hell. I think that would drive me crazy to have in the garage all the time. Will have to config charging to run at night. Surprised more people aren’t put off by it.

I should have expected that. :)
In all seriousness, I cannot say mine hums much, nor can I say I have heard anything loud enough to be annoying. Subjective I guess. I also dont begin charging immediately after pulling into the garage. When the garage was super warm 2 months ago, the fan would kick on during evening charging. We have a BEV Volvo also in the garage and when that fan energizes it drowns out the Mach-e.

One you install your L2, you will never have to charge while you’re not asleep again.

Garage has plenty of insulation to not hear anything while it's charging in there.

If the hum is loud enough to be annoying as hell, I wonder if there's an actual issue, or more likely I'm just jealous that a sound as quiet as that is annoying :/ Most people's home HVAC units here are literally 5x louder than that, and that's inside the home.

You need to post audio of it before anyone can say it is normal. It does have a quiet hum. Sounds like it is charging. Their was some undue noise at the beginning when the fan went berserk but have not heard many say it is really noisy.

Loud is subjective... the coolant pumps are "loud" if they need to run. The charger in the car makes a hum when charging at a high current setting.

If it charges at 40A or 32A a hum is more noticeable... if you get an aftermarket EVSE, which you should for a variety of reasons, you can turn down the charge rate and the hum will decrease a lot.

He mentioned 120V which is a bit weird for it to be really too loud charging at that. My car is decreasing the amperage by itself now; so now I am missing my hum ;)

I missed the 120 part. It's been a while since I charged mine at that level but I don't recall much hum and certainly no pumps on 120. hmmmm. ?

I'm charging using 120v too for now, and mine hums even after it has reached the 85% Max Charge Level. Oh, and it is also outside my Preferred Charging Time. Seems like it should be doing nothing and be completely quiet.

Anyone else notice this?
