You think paint chips are from poor build quality???? You’re joking right?

Build quality, no. Paint quality, yes.

From my short experience with my MME, the build/paint quality in comparison to the other vehicles that I own are not good to say the least.

Don't get me wrong, the MME drives great and is fun to drive. The "quality" of the MME is like most other domestic brands. They don't put emphasis in quality and instead rely on people that ignore imperfections or people that choose to ignore other manufacturers results.

I compare many domestic brands to the McDonalds food chain. The quality isn't that good but they have a strong following. It tastes good at first but the after taste sucks.

I still go to a McDonalds once in a while and I am reminded of that every time. This MME is kind of like that in a sense. ;)

Many reasons I'm sure. Benefits aren't proven over a good wax job. Required maintenance, reapplication, special soap. I'm glad they don't apply ceramic or any other sealer. My vehicles look great with Collinite 845.

Agree on the ceramic coating. Mostly marketing. Cost is a scam.
Yah, I have to recant my statement. Ceramic is not advertised to prevent chips. That is definitely what PPF is for. I've just been lucky (on the lack of chips). The ceramic has just made wiping the car clean easier.

Guys, I drove my car into a wall and it completely crumpled. Bad build quality - where are the days where the car just bounces off? :p

In seriousness, it's not just Ford. With modern vehicles, environmental standards have gotten really strict on paint and what types offgassing/byproducts they produce. These days, most paints are water based and "environmentally friendly". I worked at another OEM that is "known to be reliable/good quality" and all their new paint you can scratch with a fingernail. Cars literally came from factory with swirl marks.

I have a 1991 Mitsubishi vehicle and the paint is fine; no peeling or bubbling, couple chips from stones. Paint quality from "back in the day" will always be better if it was kept in shape.

You know, given how inexpensive and effective the ceramic coating has proven to be, I do wonder why they don't just ship all cars with it. I suppose when you are trying to cut costs and speed up production....
Paint needs to have cured for about a month before ceramic coating can be applied. That’s not happening at any factory .

Depends upon what you mean by benefits Rick. Lower routine maintenance for ceramic coatings vs wax is one that matters to me personally. Specifically, in high UV areas the ceramic coatings UV protection against aging on our paint jobs is a great plus. A good wax doesn’t last even a month here before breaking down. Far less work. But you know what neither ceramic coating nor wax does? They won’t prevent chips from flying gravel, rock or sand. For that, you need PPF, which also has issues. There is no perfect solution.

As for the OP, the aerodynamics of the Mach-e enhance the chances of a rock induced paint event. Get used to it or take preventative measures.

I have been told by two auto body guys that Ford is notorious for soft paint, which can chip easily. That does not mean poor build quality. I got a ceramic 5y on my GT, but that does not really prevent chips, dings. I was too cheap to get PPF.

I can kinda understand the cost - if they actually go through all the recommended steps, professional application sounds like a significant and time consuming pain in the ass. I don't doubt that my guy spent quite a few hours on the job, but it just doesn't do a whole lot. It was advertised as: literally just run a hose over the car - you don't have to scrub or even dry. Well that was crap. I agree that it does make the dirt wash off easier, but I still have to use a sponge sometimes, and I definitely have to dry the car to avoid water spots. The ceramic saves me maybe 5-10 minutes each time I wash the car.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. This vehicle has one of the best paint jobs I've ever seen, AND it's held up very well in my 18 months of ownership. Yep, I put PPF on the hood and front bumper... because of it's flat nose and large hood. The rest of the car is just paint. It's a daily in NW Ohio, so it sees all weather. I disagree with the OP's assessment completely.

So you're saying there was actually a benefit to my car riding around on a train for 4 months before getting to the dealer and having the ceramic coat applied?

Because sometimes it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.

OP’s responses just further prove that point.

Agree. So why didn't ford put the same coating on our 60k cars.? That's my point. If they are truly concerned about build quality make a quality product!
Ceramic coating doesn't do jack shit when it comes to saving you from rock chips. You and the person that posted it are conflating it with PPF.

Agreed, PPF protects against rocks...and even then sometimes it doesn't matter. Ceramic Coating helps with a few thing and essentially can also go over your ppf as well. Paint won't fade as fast from UV, easier to wash etc.... It costs a lot simply because of Labor. It takes a long time to apply properly.
