Last night went to dinner for my wife’s birthday. Got back to car and it wouldn’t shift into drive. Message on dash said to pull over safely even though car was parked. Battery icon showed on dash. I assumed my 12 volt had died so called ford roadside for a jump. Jump didn’t fix the issue so had to call back for a tow. The jump cost me $96 and the tow $169 to get it to the closest Ford dealership because to get it to my local dealer would have been $450. Waited 3 hours for tow truck only for them to say they couldn’t load it because they needed a dolly since car couldn’t be put in neutral. I told Ford roadside that the car would not shift into neutral so don’t know why they wouldn’t have requested one with the right equipment. Ford roadside wanted me to pay another $169 for second tow. I disputed this as it was not my fault, had to escalate to a manager to get them to waive the fee, this really upset me. Waited another hour only for second tow truck to cancel before even arriving. We finally decided to just go home as it was already 3 am and they had no idea when tow would arrive. Paid $70.00 more for Uber. I’ve had no major issues with my car for 4 years until now. Finally got a call at 10am from tow company letting me know they had arrived to pick up car. I know dealership is closed today so not sure where they’re going to leave the car but frankly I’m so upset I don’t even care anymore.

2021 Extended Range RWD

Update got these alerts this morning probably after Service shop started looking at it

IMG_7131.webp

Update 2: Just got off the phone with advisor. Tech says it’s the 12 volt battery. I told him it was just replaced 2 months ago, he said if I emailed him receipt they could warranty replace the battery. Also said tech wants to keep it overnight to see if there’s some phantom 12 volt drain. Asked me about my dash cam, how long I’ve had it, maybe it’s draining battery. I’ve had that dashcam since June 2022, also let him know camera shuts off when car is turned off, I actually used to have a power bank to power the camera while off because it got no juice from car when off but I got rid of the power bank because it was recalled. So I guess I’ll see tomorrow what they say.

Update 3: Dealer says car is ready for pick up. Looks like It was the 12v battery, not sure how it can go bad after 2 months. This was such a reliable car for the first 4 years of ownership but now i think I’ll be a little worried it will leave me stranded every time i drive it. Have a roadtrip planned to Universal Studios next month for my birthday but thinking maybe i should get a rental or fly just to be safe. Going to probably be getting another car soon but in the meantime i will definitely sign up for AAA just in case. Well off to grab another expensive Uber to pick it up.

Update 4: well the saga continues. I was on my way to dealer to pick up the car and I get a call from the service advisor. He said someone from Fords Electric division just called him and asked him to keep the car at the shop a bit longer. Apparently their engineers are reviewing some of my cars data. She didn’t know what they had found and told him she would call him back tomorrow. I let him know I was on my way there in an Uber, so he said they would give me a loner when I got there and then would drop off my car and pick theirs up after it was all done. So I’m driving back home in a white ecobost Mustang.

Update 5: just got the heads up from the Dealer Service rep. Ford wants them to replace the HVBJB due to a stored code in the PCM that could leave me stranded again. They are ordering the parts and I should have my car back by the end of next week. Well I guess it turned out to be what a lot of you guys suspected it was. Im kinda glad because it just being the 2 month old 12v just didn’t sit well with me.

Glad they got it figured out, but it's odd that they didn't see that from the get go. When my HVBJB failed, Ford and the dealership were both able to see the failure code (DTC) remotely and the replacement part was ordered before I even dropped the car off.

Have you the hvb recall done? I have a 2021 first edition.

Update: Dealer called. It’s high voltage junction box they have to replace. He said there’s a TSB 25-2247. Day and half work. What is confusing is that I had all recalls done on the car, not sure how this was missed. Glad it’s getting fixed and I hope it’s covered by warranty.

Day and a half? My service department told me they had to order parts and would be approximately 1 week, you’re lucky. My HVBJB was replaced last year as part of the recall and that’s the part that failed. So appears replacements aren’t any y better than the originals.

Adding my car to the list of "Stop Safely Now" faults.

3FMTK1SS4MMA60468

2021 @ 82,614 Km

Recall 25S65 (door lockout issue) and 80,000 Km maintenance done Jan 6 @ 82,031 Km.

Since then, car seems to have had charging-schedule problems and climate-start schedule problems when away-from-home.

Today:

Charged car then moved it to another spot in the parking lot.

About 6 hours later, tried to start car but failed with "Stop Safely Now" faults.

Abandoned car. Will try troubleshooting it another day.

I figured it has to be the HVBJB or something besides the 12V battery.

A TSB is NOT a recall. It is guide to how to fix a specific problem. So it would not have been done as part of doing recalls. And yes, it's covered by the EV warranty. Fairly common Mach-E problem if you read about it.

Actually that’s just the work assuming they start the job on Monday. It might be a full week when all said and done.

Once the part is on hand the removal, replacement and associated tasks are about a full days work. Often that means a day and a half or so.

Update: Finally heard back from the dealership. They will be replacing the HVBJB under warranty. Car supposedly did not have any open recalls on it when I bought it so I don't know if this is its first or second HVBJB replacement.

Mine is still sitting at the dealership with zero communication back to me. I know it got moved into the shop today because I got an alert on my Ford app. I hope they find and fix the root cause but I don't have much faith in any "fix" they attempt. Especially after seeing that even the recall replacing the HVBJB doesn't seem to be a permanent fix and many are having to be replaced more than once.

It's too bad because I really liked this car for the first 13 days until it failed. On the plus side they did give me a nice service loaner even if it is a gas guzzler.

The number of these failures is unacceptable. This is by far the absolute WORST car I've ever owned and I haven't even had it a month yet. It's even worse than a 300k mile Geo Metro that I owned about 25 years ago.
Many years ago our neighbor had a Yugo. One day the drivers side mirror gave up the ghost….it just fell off while sitting in the driveway. Thank was a long time ago but you don’t forget things like that.

sorry to hear buddy.

went through that with my 21...including the whole tow fiasco (multiple companies and calls, uber home, repeat the next day, until finally one came with a dolly). fortunately between AAA and ford, i paid nothing for my tow attempts. unfortunately those early HVBJ are time bombs... not much you can do. fingers crossed the newer replacements hold up better. word is they are and should be covered by the electric powertrain warranty should they fail again.

but you did all the right things (replaced 12V)....

i was bummed at first and cursing my luck and ford, but a few days after getting my mach-e back for the HVBJ replacement, i was back to loving the car. hope it's the same for you.

If they're replacing the HVBJB, they've pretty much identified the issue. Things do fail, even the new ones, on occasion. If there were no outstanding recalls, this was probably replacement number 2.

The actual replacement process is about a full day's work to drop the battery, replace the part, raise the battery, and secure it. Then they need to bleed and refill the coolant system and such things. My 21's HVBJB was replaced under the recall and has been trouble free in the more than a year since it was done.

Good luck.

Confirmed that this was a HVBJB failure. Fortunately, part was in-stock, but car will still require several days to repair.
