This. So much this. This is what insurance is for folks. Don't bog down your overwhelmed police departments with this sort of nonsense. I'd much rather the police spend their time chasing bad folks than recovering someone's $60,000 car with some blurry video.

To be fair, I would hope the local police take the theft of a $60,000 car much more seriously than some $60 Amazon package.

Ok so for everyone following this thread who's talked about Ford's Stolen Vehicle Recovery Program that I mentioned back in post #18 I have some follow up information that I received back from Ford.

The "Ford Stolen Vehicle Services" is part of SecuriAlert. SecuriAlert was supposed to be released in the EU only, however it was mistakenly deployed to some vehicles in the USA including the Mach-E and F-150 lines. Those that have SecuriAlert should have a screen where it has a stolen vehicle services button to report the vehicle stolen. In the USA only the fleet services have this ability at this time.

This would explain why the "Ford Stolen Vehicle Services" and "SecuriAlert" only have EU publications on media.ford.com. It would also explain why all the newer MME's don't have SecuriAlert in the FP app. If you're one of the few that have SecuriAlert, I wouldn't count on the stolen vehicle services working in unfortunate case that you would need them.

I was not given any indication as to if or when we would get this service in the USA. All of the information I was provided is documented here and there's nothing further that I can add. Also, take what I was told with whatever grains of salt you wish as Ford's communication with the public has been wildly inaccurate.

Unless you personally know the person who stole the car and know how and where to find them, all it will be is a video of who stole your car…… and you won’t get the car back and no one will go looking for that person.

Bank of America has some great high definition multi angle video of the woman who smashed my wife’s window and stole her purse (as well as dozens of other cars the same day.)

Because 2 days after she did, the criminal walked into the bank and successfully cashed a $3,000 check…….. on the account we reported stolen and had closed right away.

Unless there is a murder involved, no one is chasing down the criminals in videos unfortunately.

Which doesn’t help the sentiment about law enforcement unfortunately.

You would hope, but other than putting a note down that it’s a stolen vehicle so that if it does turn up they can do something, what exactly can they do?

Which doesn’t help the sentiment about law enforcement unfortunately.

Maybe, maybe not. For me it’s less frustrating if I have a more realistic view and realistic expectations of what to expect from them.

Let’s say you have video evidence and a perfect picture of the person who stole the car.

What can they do with it? Run it through facial recognition software then use local traffic cameras to pinpoint that persons location (movie magic).

It won’t help them find the criminal nor will it help you get your car back.

What it WILL do is serve as evidence if they happen to catch the criminal somehow.

Like they raid a chop shop and find your stolen vehicle. Or the vehicle is used in a crime. Or the VIN shows up if they try to sell it or something.

But they aren’t going to put out a BOLO and have officers searching the streets of Orlando looking for random thief number 10,000 in the city. They hopefully have better ways to devote their time.

Personally it makes me feel better about how they spend their time. Not going on wild goose chases.

Yeah, I think some salt grains are definitely in order for the info they gave you. I have SecuriAlert and there's no option in it to report your car stolen. And considering it was the headline (only?) feature in the release notes for 1.4.0, I find it hard to believe it was added by mistake.

I've had stuff stolen from my property and the police wouldn't even let us file a report. Yes, they should have all the evidence and investigate as much as they think they can handle, following those threads can lead to larger busts. But I don't have much confidence after the experiences I've had.

They should at least file a report. When my house was broken into, they put everything that I had serial numbers for on a list. Then for 2 years whenever stolen property shows up they check it against the list database to see if something pops.

They also got fingerprints that went into the database. 2 yrs later the kid got caught and they could pin multiple crimes against him. I didn’t get any stuff back unfortunately. They did give me an automatic judgement against him, but since he’s been in and out of jail, I never got a penny.

But other than the database, what can they really do with a video or picture?

Imagine you had the full police resources at your disposal for a week. The whole force working on just your case? How would you solve it?

Massive manhunt? Hours of searching surveillance cameras?

Then think about if it would yield results and is worth the time. What you are left with is what you would want them to do.

It would explain why later builds don't have it and have yet to receive it as an update though. I don't know how else they would come up with "mistakenly updated". Seems too specific.

I had a friend who owns a new Tesla Model Y show me the camera functions and security that Tesla builds into its cars. You can't get near a Tesla without it taking very clear, detailed video of you. The software will also highlight specific events (like when a lady opened her car door into his car) so that you don't have to watch everything and can instead skip straight to important segments. While the video my friend showed me was displayed on the screen in his car, I'm pretty sure you can also access this thru the Tesla app on your cell phone. So it would seem to me that a thief can't steal a Tesla without there being a record of the theft.

The MY had the option only via the USB flash drive inside the card. Just recently they also open the cameras' live feed to the phone app.

The people who steal cars are the bad guys. They’re using the cars in other crimes. They’re committing a serious felony. They’re often armed and just as often rather dangerous. They are the bad folks.
