I have had 4 EVs over the last 10 years, and my Mach-e is 3.5 years old. On L2 charging I have only ever pushed the release button on the charger handle, it stops the charging and I unplug. I have never stopped charging another way first.

4 cars, zero issue.

On DCFC I push the button next to the charge port, or stop it via app or in car.

I always just push the button on the connector for L2 charging, even if it's actively charging. For DCFC, you gotta push the button next to the port.

I just did an experiment. I started an L2 charging session, let it run for about a minute, then poked the button next to the charger port. It kept right on charging. As expected.

Just make sure you disconnect from the car before disconnecting the cord from the adapter.
When I use the Tesla adaptor [which is often], I always disconnect from the adaptor first, then pull out the adaptor from my MME. In 32,000 miles I have never had an issue with it.

It should work fine with a properly-constructed adaptor. As long as the pilot signal pin disconnects before the power pins, there’s no problem. Some cheap adapters donā€˜t fully comply with this requirement of the J1772 protocol.

I'm sure your right. I should also note in my confusion, I do hit the center button on the MME [with the 5 segmented lights] first, then I unplug the Tesla station first, then I remove the adaptor. Also worth noting, home charging I simply unplug from the MME and do NOT push any buttons. Hope I clarified my position.

This thread would be a lot shorter if y’all would just listen to @RickMachE

The button is for stopping DCFC charging.

It ends the charging session. How is that no function? The same as if he tells it to stop charging in his app.
Have you tried it when charging at home? Do the blue lights stop flashing?

Rick is right. If level 2 charging, like in your garage at home, all you need to do is press the button on the handle of the level 2 (J1772) cord or on the adapter if using a NACS adapter. That will stop the charge and you can pull the plug. The button in the lighted circle to the right of the plug is for stopping level 3 charging. You don’t need to press it to stop level 2 charging. If you are level 3 charging, then yes, press that button before pulling on the heavy CCS1 handle. You will hear the internal lock disengage and the circular lights will extinguish. You can then unplug the level 3 handle.
Hi,
I have a level 2 charger at home and I can not disconnect the handle before I have pushed the button in the middle of the LED's as it unlocks it.

What kind of charger do you have?
I’ve used the Ford mobile charger, and a Tesla adapter on my ChargePoint and both have buttons.
