Hi All.

Some of you might remember that i posted in January about me crashing my Mach-e in to a standing car in front of me by mistakenly pressing accelerator instead of the brake pedal. I got my car finally back from the repair shop last week Thursday. So this morning i was driving home from the gym and a bird landed on the road, i did not want to run it over so it was a "unplanned breaking situation" as was not expecting to break on the straight stretch of road. The same Happened, i hit the accelerator not the brake!!! So This makes me think- is my brain playing tricks with me, i mainly drive in town so only use one pedal to accelerate and break, in the situations when emergency breaking is needed my head automatically recognises the accelerator as the break pedal. There is no other way to explain this! If there would have been a car in front of me instead of a bird i would have likely ended up in the back of it doing the same thing i did in January- hitting wrong pedal by mistake. So i am not writing this to get laughed at as incompetent driver( i am sure i will), i am writing this to raise awareness and ask if anyone has experienced similar situations? Google does return some results when searching for this, but not much.
I personally think i am a good driver with 17 years of experience, passing additional driving qualifications for private hire taxi, driven cars, vans, pickups, sports cars, mini vans, people carriers across Europe, driven in London, Paris, Warsaw and Riga, driven manual, semi automatic and automatic cars and never ever had a similar situation up until now. I was not tired, i had my full attention on the road, not on any medication etc... I am 37 years old, healthy so age is not the issue either...I have now turned the function off as i really think somehow my brain thinks the pedal has both functions and also uses it in emergency breaking.
I know that it is difficult to share with others that you potentially have done something wrong and mistaken a pedal, but it has happened to me now twice, i got lucky this time. How is your experience with this? I

I will not make fun of you. I quite respect someone who can admit their mistakes and raise awareness to prevent others from making the same mistake. That speaks to true honesty with yourself and the rest of us.
I am a critical care flight nurse. We have monthly peer reviews where some of us get a chance to share with our peers. We share some of the tougher calls and raise awareness to what we may have done better given a second try. It’s to help our peers in case they find themselves in a similar situation. Being able to admit limitations and help others not follow in your shoes is a true sign of a mature (or old and wisened) mind.

Interesting. I drive 1PD exclusively, however, my "muscle memory" has ALWAYS been to hit the brake in emergency situations.

I guess if I were you if you cannot change that response, I would turn off 1pd.

Did the bird survive?

I am an acute-care physical therapist working in a rural hospital. I agree 100% with what @Murse-In-Airy says!

As a PT, I'll also say this: if one way to to perform a physical function doesn't work or appears unsafe, try another. There are just about always multiple ways to do a task. The safest, most functional way wins.

With 1PD off, I'd suggest that you also think about eliminating distractions. Some suggestions would include not using your cellphone in the car even handsfree, not engaging with the center screen while driving, etc.

Given these two experiences, you should be spending a lot of effort focusing on your driving. You have been very luck with these two experiences to have not hurt anyone, including yourself.

Be safe.

Interesting question. My answer is no, I have never felt even for a split second like using the accelerator pedal for an emergency stop. I suppose it is possible, but it never happens to me. I think you are unusual in this respect.

I recently had a Tesla sail out right in front of me in a parking lot and stop directly in my path just a few feet ahead. I had pressed my brake to the floor before I even realized I had done so. I don't think it's technically a reflex action, but pretty close.

Driving since age 14 (farm permit) for over 44 years (senior) and never confused the brake & accelerator.

Even driving 3 pedal (clutch) manual shift on the column shift farm pickups - never confused.

My current ride is a PHEV with similar 1PD - accelerator off means light braking, using paddles engages more....

Now I am getting slightly worried as I am getting both the MME and Lightning this year - is there a light deceleration setting on the 1PD ?....

I was trying out 1PD a couple of weekends ago because I wanted to see if it was different after the attempted dealer installed update. (It was slightly better...)

About 15-20 miles into my drive, I came around a curve to see cars stopped and backed up at a traffic light so I lifted off the accelerator completely and the car didn't slowdown enough so I pulled my foot back even further (apparently expecting increased braking which of course didn't happen)

I ended up using the brake pedal and it was a panic stop. I quickly turned off 1PD and resumed normal driving which I enjoy better anyway.

I know many people with these cars that do not like using 1PD. It isn't for everyone. I am glad Ford gives us a choice.

This. I have no issues with hitting the brakes for a panic stop. If anyone does, turn 1pd off and move on. It’s an optional feature.
