Every so often, weather's perfect out, and my automatic wipers just wipe. No reason, no logic to it, it's happened at night it's happened in the day, although I think it's more frequent in the day. It's not an everyday thing, it's more like a once in a few days or so. I can turn the automatic wipers off, but I wondered if others are having the same phantom wipe?

I have this happen as well. As you describe it happens if I leave the wipers in auto mode and is usually once every day or so with no apparent reason. I would be curious what sensors are used for this or if its just the center windshield camera making determinations and somehow misinterpreting things.

Does anyone know for sure what tech on the car is used for auto wiper decisions?

The MME uses an IR emitter and sensor, located near the camera in the center of the windshield. It is similar/the same as what most vehicles use for rain sense. If you have had the windshield replaced and the gel pad for the sensor was not replaced you may see more instances of unwanted operation. Leaving the stalk in the off position is the easiest way to eliminate the phantom wipe.

There is a courtesy wipe setting, make sure that's off. Other than that, I just always leave mine off and turn them on auto when it starts raining, too easy for them to get tricked that it is raining and streak my windshield with some bird poop!

Agree, it's just a bit strange to me I have another Ford with automatic wipers and I've never turned them off, I can't recall any phantom wiping.

Same thing happens to me, totally random and I noticed the right wiper doesn't go down all the way. Weird.

I've noticed this in my 22 Mach E. However, I never had it occur in my 21 Job 2 Mach E (sold it for the 22). The 21 and 22 were the same exact trim

I noticed this on mine the first time we had rain. I’ve come to realize that it sits up a bit (30 seconds or so) then drops down once there’s no more wiping to do.
Kinda interesting that they programmed a stop point higher than the resting place. Wonder what the logic was.
Probably something like .000002% less wear on the motor each wipe which will give the motor x more useful wipes in its life.. idk

Yep, we get this too. Happens most often just after starting the car. Oddly enough, the rear wiper also sometimes does a single wipe and that's not even an automatic wiper

Seems to have started somewhat recently (last couple of months). One of the experience enhancements no doubt.

has Disabling the courtesy wipe actually helped? I have it randomly wipe regardless…
