Curious where forum members land on form vs function when buying a car, and specifically the Mach E.

Personally, I lean towards more form vs function. My attitude is I want to love my vehicle, get a smile on my face when I see it in the driveway/parking lot, customize it to my tastes etc. The Mach E has been no exception. I had a custom set of wheels in the back of the tire shop for about 2 months before actually getting my Mach E, added a spoiler, painted brake calipers etc. Some of these things hinder the cars efficiency but again for me the look achieved is all worth it to me.

-EDITED TO ADD:
Another example of how I pick form over function. I would not buy the base model Mach E because it is missing the vertical bars in the headlights (not sure exactly what they're called) as part of the DLRs ie its just a upper light bar.

Form was important to me in the initial purchase process, for sure. And I, too, had several modifications planned and purchased prior to my car being delivered. I get a kick out of the form... But now that the vehicle has been purchased, and the form has been modified to my liking, it's all about function. If the car doesn't function well, then the form doesn't matter... (Fortunately, I haven't had any functionality problems to taint my form-buzz) ;)

Yeah I agree. I mean function is still definitely important, and I wasn't inferring that I'd put up with a dumpster fire of a car so long as it looks cool. I'll give a few things a little more patience if I love the look of something.

Function. I have been modifying cars since the ‘70s. Always function. There are little dress-up items that are fine by me (like the hood bird on my T/A), but I ordered a GT-PE with a metal roof for a function that was more important to me than the 360 cameras’ function would have been. ?‍♂?

Of course, the base aesthetic needs to be pleasing to start with. ??

I voted form. I would have taken the BEV plunge years ago, except there was nothing that looked decent that was in my price range.

For the most point, it is function. Form has a place in the decision process, however. If I have two equally compelling vehicles with similar functionality, I will pick the one that has the better form for me. I found the first generation of the Prius to be very interesting, but found the form to be disappointing. The second generation was much better.

For me it was ? form. I got towed to a Ford dealership when my Escape died on the freeway in 106 degree weather.

With my head spinning from being on the freeway for 3.5 hours and then another 45 minutes waiting for the tow, I looked up and saw a MME in the showroom.

I had to wait about an hour to be picked up, so I decided to take a closer look at the MME. I didn’t even know what it was or that it existed. Every door I opened made me say WOW!

I’m a big guy and I never really fit well in the ice Mustangs. The ones I rented over the years were small with no room in the back seat. I opened the door and it was bigger? Then I stepped back and saw the button on the back door. I thought it was a 2 door at first. Opened it and it was larger than my Escape.

walked around the back and holy crap…it’s a hatchback.

I was smitten right then and there.

Totally a form impulse buy for me with very limited research on my part.

Happy I did it.

Ooooh. Tough one. I voted "function" simply because driving this thing is such a blast. I love the instant torque. It's pretty neat leaving everyone else in the dust at a traffic light, without even trying. Only Teslas can touch the Mach-E. OK, I did get hit at a traffic light by an Ionic 6, but he clearly was trying, and I didn't notice him until he was a car length ahead of me. My bad on that one...

But the form of this guy is pretty neat as well. Having a great looking car that performs so nicely is simply a win-win in my book.

Beautiful (well-designed, high quality) function has an emotional appeal all its own...

I had a Prius for 13 years. Of course I prioritize function over form. That being said, I have never had a car I wanted to photograph as much as the MME.

Form for sure. I’d rather have something good looking that takes a little extra effort than something average and simple.

That little extra effort weeds out the plebs.

Gotta have both. I’m greedy I guess.

Won’t drive an ugly fast car nor a pretty slow one.

Not sure how to reply to this. I love my wife and drive my car. If my car kept me warm at night and could snuggle up then maybe I could learn to love it to!
