I am new to EVs and wonder if I should buy an adapter to charge my MME at Tesla destination chargers. If so what App's are used and how is the charging paid for.
We normally charge at home but plan on doing some road trips (VT to Fl) soon.

Tesla is reportedly going to open up the Supercharger network to non-Tesla later this year, but as of now it’s not yet available.

Elon has said they may install CCS plugs on superchargers which would make an adapter not necessary.

Edit: Just saw you said destination chargers. Disregard.

I have this one. Just plug it in, no app required.

Looks to be out of stock, hope they get more by Christmas as I want to get one to keep in the frunk of my 22 when it shows up.

Research the places you plan on traveling to see if you really need it. I bought one before I got my car (18 months ago) and the only time I’ve used it was once to make sure it worked. In hindsight, I should have just bought a really good bottle of scotch instead. ?

I think it is regional, around here you can not swing a dead cat without hitting a Tesla. I have used mine about six times in the past year. Some hotels have destination chargers and restaurants. Last time I used it was at the Moat Smokehouse in Conway NH.. Honestly you can live without it but just like a tire plug kit, it is nice to have.

There is no app used to put an adapter on a charging cord.

Tesla destination chargers are free. Their use may be restricted by the owner of the charger, but there is no cost - unless they turn it off and make you pay them to turn it back on.

As has been stated, depending on where you are traveling, you may never need one.

Destination chargers are not networked so no App involved. I own one because of local EV friendly businesses that have them and will be handy on the road as many resort Inns have them. They push 45 amps typically, so add 37 mi./hr vs. 20 from Chargepoint L2s. They are not a must have, but good to have if you can get enough use out of one.

You might be interested in this video. Long video, but the relevant part is 6:35 to 12:33. A good summary of adapter purchase suggestions and other recommendations.

Note that product links are available in the video description on the YouTube page.

Every destination charger I've read about or used was closer to a normal level 2 charger, or even slower. Nowhere near 45amps.

Hard agree with the advice here. I bought one too a year ago when I got my Mach-E, and it's never left the glove box. If you have a Level 2 charger at home (which I strongly recommend if you're going to drive full electric), you're going to leave the house every day with a "full tank." Unless you're often doing long road trips, AND DCFC chargers are scarce in the area you're going, AND there are a bunch of Tesla destination chargers available, then it will be useful, but otherwise, not so much. The price of a TeslaTap buys you a lot of DCFC charging.

Not saying "don't do it," because I did obviously, but this mighty need I thought I'd have for it simply didn't materialize.

I have one and I am glad I have it, because it reduces some of the range anxiety knowing I can use a Tesla destination charger if I need to. That said, I have used it once at a restaurant while on vacation, and I have had it for six months. It was mostly a test but I did need the charge.

Be careful with the Chinese knockoffs. The branded Tesla Tap is worth the money IMO.

Yeah, already a good number of posts on this forum and other EV forums of someone cutting a corner on the electrical side and then the "almost fire, plastic melted" results. Not saying TeslaTap is infallible or anything, but it gives me more confidence than something built to minimum viable product levels and thrown on Amazon.

I balked at the price. Just seems like way too much money for a “might use it once” device. You can probably get towed once for that amount.

I've stopped recommending the Tesla Tap Mini because the tolerances are just too tight. I've had to stand on the charging cable at Tesla chargers to get enough leverage to disconnect it. I could live with that, but when I tried it on my wife's RAV4 Prime, the J1772 end was too tight and I couldn't get it to plug in fully. Then I spent 20 minutes trying to get it disconnected from the car. I've switched to the Lectron 48A adapter and haven't looked back. It's a little bigger, but still plenty small enough.

I bought the small Lectron adapter to keep for those just in case moment. Not a major expense and it resides in the frunk with my tire plug kit and extra microfiber cloths and towels.

While 99% of my travels are all within my GOM range, I like to prepare for emergencies that may pop up at unfortunate times.
