I don’t precondition as I have not seen good argument between added range vs. electricity use. I did have interesting situation at least to me where I went to work arrived at 18 degrees left later temp went up to 40. My % battery remaining went up from 18 to 20% while at work.
With an OBD2 reader and an app like car scanner it's interesting what's going on behind the scenes as we can see actual battery energy vs what the SOC will display and how much that will fluctuate. We can also see HVB temps with preconditioning and on the drive. If you have a longer commute, preconditioning will definitely help with efficiency. Depending on how far you go the kwh added to precondition will make up for the kwh saved on the drive but not if you're only going a few miles.

A question for all of you facing similar cold conditions and precondition your car. How much range is recovered by the time you leave?
None, because none was lost.

The GOM (guess-o-meter) is simply estimating range based on factors. Ignore it.

In your situation, here's the thing to test.

1) Precondition your car. Leave at the departure time and drive to work and note the miles per kWh you get on the drive, as well as how it changes while you're driving.

2) On a nearly identical drive (driving to work, similar temperature), don't precondition your car. You will get lower miles per kWh, which will change as you drive, the longer the drive, the higher the miles per kWh.

Compare the two drives. Unscientific, but you will see some of the impact.

The real difference is in heat I think. If you don't precondition, and therefore have to run the heat to warm the car up and be comfortable, you're going to take a hit. If you precondition, you can make it to work with the seat warmer, steering wheel heater, and setting the heat on 68.

I preconditioned yesterday for a run to 3 stores. It seems to have used 5.3kWh. For me, that's 66 cents. I then drove 24 miles. It took 12.5kWh to recharge the car (from the wall), which includes 1.34 warming the battery at 4:36AM, so 11.16. With 13% loss, that's 9.7kWh to drive 24 miles, or 2.47 miles per kWh. Would I have gotten 2.47 miles per kWh if I hadn't preconditioned in 17 degree weather? No. If I got 2.0, it would be 12kWh used, from the wall that would be 13.8, and I used 12.5kWh. If I got 1.5, it would be 18.4. So basically that's breakeven, i.e. 18.4kWh to get 1.5 driving, vs. 12.5 + 5.3 = 17.8 to get 2.5 driving.

I suspect if you did really good measurements, you'd find that the cost of setting a departure point is greater by some small number than the cost of not doing it, in electricity usage. But, it would vary greatly by how far you drive and how cold it is.

Doubtful, since he’s in Naples, FL!
Naples is farther south, but here in Central Florida I see a significant difference in range when the temperature drops below 50 degrees F. Yesterday, I drove around 120 miles in 80 degree weather and got 3.7 miles per kWh on average.

I gotta know. Was this on purpose? ?
First you post an incidental (or not) 69 then an incidental (or not) spelling mistake in the grammar police thread. ?

Wow, you guys get more than a mile per percent? I get 86 miles on a 100% charge! I guess my MME doesn't like sub-zero Fahrenheit and mountains.

Just curious though.... Did they give you a hard time in the dealership when you were picking it up? I'm worried too... you know

I think it’s my turn? ? Select AWD, current temps outside are about 20F here in Northern NJ

I’ll join in too. Select AWD. Pa currently 18 degrees. Charged to 85 on Thursday. Only started it up yesterday to melt some of the ice and haven’t touched it since.

Wait, are we trying to show who has the least or the most range? Do I win?

I believe 346 is the biggest number I've seen posted.
