The icon on the lower left of the screen only appears when the temperature is below 39 degrees. I looked at it several times and it works as promised. It only appears below 39.
what is the significance of this and why is it there?

My guess is that it's close enough to 32deg, and there is some latency and accuracy issues in the measurement, so it warns you that there MAY be ice on the road?

I have noticed it is only gone above 39 degrees. I was wondering what that means and when that happens?

My cold warning light sometimes comes on in the low 40s. No biggie, as I assume it is just telling me to be careful since the GT-PE’s stock tires are not supposed to be used under 45F and there could be black ice. ?‍♂?

They have to pick some temperature for ice warning. FWIW, BMW picks 37 degrees.

Your car measures air temperature. The air responds to energy gain or loss much more rapidly than the road. When the car is measuring an air temperature of 39 ºF (37 ºF in my Toyota), the road surface temperature may be significantly lower (or higher, but that's less worrisome) and thus there may be ice or frost on the road, including "black ice." So the car gives you a little heads-up.

Bridges ice over before the roadway does, because of the cold air cooling bridges from below. Hence (IMHO), the 39 degrees (37 degrees on my old 1990 BMW) is for the likeliest first manifestation of an iced-up road section, i.e. on a bridge.

I would rather have the absolute temperature displayed personally but since I give everyone a hard time about the organization and content of the dashboard ultimately the display of this information and its location is more important to the safe operation of the car and the absolute temperature would be a redundancy that would merely be a convenience.

You can change the compass on the IPC to display the temperature with FORScan if you prefer. I did, and I like it much better.
