Sorry if this has been brought up before.

Have a level 2 charger at home (juice box 40 EV) that we’ve been using for our model 3 and always charges the car around 30-33 miles/hr.

My new MME premium extended only charges at 18-22 miles/hr.

Is this normal?
If it is normal, is this a software or hardware limitation?

"Miles Per Hour" of charging is based on the actual energy put into the vehicle in an hour (e.g. kWh) divided by the "efficiency" of the vehicle (e.g. how many miles can it travel on a kWh). A Model 3 is substantially more efficient than the Mach-e, so it goes further on the same amount of energy. Thus (assuming the amount of energy delivered to each vehicle is roughly the same), the "miles per hour" for a Model 3 will be higher than for a Mach-e.

Normal for a 32A EVSE.
Your Tesla is more efficient than your MME so it gains more range for the same amount of charge time.

thanks for the info guys. A little disappointing. I thought I read somewhere the MME can charge at 28 miles/hr on a level 2. Is that not true? What if I upgrade the charger? The juicebox is a 40A charger

Let's put this another way. A gas tank will fill up in 2 minutes. How many miles of range you get filled up per second depends on how much gas your car burns.

Your charger does 32A max for a charge power of 7.2kwh approx.

The only way to do better is to get a 40A or 48A charger. That requires a bigger breaker and the right gauge wires.

Ford said that if you use their branded charger which is a 48 amp system.

From the spec sheet my charger does 40A @ 9.6 KW. Also I do have a bigger breaker and wires. I had a 50A installed when I got it.

That does sound low for a 9.6 kw charge rate. Almost like it is defaulting to 6.6 kw.

Normal for a 32A EVSE.
Your Tesla is more efficient than your MME so it gains more range for the same amount of charge time.
To put it another way, it's like filling the gas tanks of a Camry and a Mustang Coupe. The number of miles each gallon gets you is higher for the Camry.

However, the Tesla miles per hour charging is based on the REPORTED Tesla range, not the actual range. That means that 30-33 mile per hour charging of the Tesla isn't really 30-33 miles per hour.

@Sy546: It's time to start thinking in comparable units. Don't think in terms of miles per hour charging, think in terms of kWh per hour of charging. That's the gallon of the EV world.

Appreciate the info. I'll just wait to upgrade it when my f150 Lighting comes in
You're gonna need a bigger breaker. The charger that comes with the lightning will probably require a 100A circuit.

If we don't move before my Lightning comes, I'm gonna need a bigger box!

Yeah I read that.

The way materials pricing has gone I'm afraid to know how much that'll cost in my house, and my costs are a lot cheaper than most lol. I'll hold off until I need it.

To access it's full potential, yes. We don't know yet, but maybe it will be configurable to a variety of circuit ratings just like Ford's Connected Charge Station.
