YEah we have an air source heat pump to heat our house, and below -15C, it just doesn't cut it anymore. Now ground source heat pumps are a different story. Tesla should start fitting those on their cars.
I know, right? It's almost like the heat pump they installed less than 12 months ago (*) in my house has an electric "emergency heat" mode as a supplement for a reason. ?‍♀

(*) I mention this to avoid "well it's because you have an ancient unit" or soms such.

Nope, just like I haven't considered driving my convertible in winter with the roof down. ?
Had a rental convertible Mustang and drove it with the top down in winter and it was awesome. Not sure I would try it in your winter weather though

Missing your point here. But cold range (lack of) has been surprising. So much so that we plan to take the Raptor on any trip over 60 miles in the winter. The Y disappoints in other ways - so much so that we may move to a MME soon.
he was kidding. it was more a knock against another person I won't name. ?

my first time in the Seattle area, it was about 40 deg. F as I was driving from the airport and saw a convertible with the top down... I asked the folks I was there to see about it, and they said "oh, sure... any time it's not raining, the top goes down!"

my personal cutoff when I drove a convertible was 50 deg. F. There's a heater in the car after all. ?

Not boasting, just saying EVs aren't unique for their poor performance in extreme cold. Expect it, plan for it, and don't lose sleep over it.
Yeah as long as your daily driving is <100 miles and you can charge at home overnight, it's all sort of moot. It's really only an issue for when you need to drive further.

Also the MME has dual coolant loops that effectively perform the same function but fanboys gonna fanboy.

Personally I'm excited for my roof to stay on.
Can you supply your sources about a dual coolant loop and how it has the same efficiency because out of 1,000s of articles I have read I never heard of that. And it sounds like it would be something Ford would market and state since everyone talks about the MY and it having a heat pump.

We usually see -25 F at least a couple of mornings every winter, but last two years have been relatively warm.

VW claims their ID heat pumps are effective to very low temps, but they do not yet offer a heat pump for U.S. ID.4, only in Europe and Canada so far. Auto tech heat pumps appear to be different than the older home tech that relied much more on supplemental electric heating, but the VW claims may or may not be accurate.

Impressive range: the heat pump in the ID.3 (similar notes around the web for ID.4)

Also, even if a heat pump is effective at lower temps, the heat pump still uses some energy, just less than the equivalent resistive heater.

I tend to disagree. My LR Y has been at about 160 miles in 30 degree temps. Started at 90% and preheated before departure. Most driving at 70 mph on interstate. Feel like at -10, would be a bit lower.
Better than mach e for sure!

Hi Guys, I'm a newbie here. All in for a MME Premium AWD ER. The talk is about how MME performs in the deep freeze. I'm wondering how it will perform here in Central Florida. In hot /humid weather. Not too many dealers in my area received MMEs yet. Still waiting for a test drive, the list is long; But, I am patient.

I just did a freeway drive in -12 to -14 (Wisconsin). I have had EV in the past so expected range issues. Unfortunately the EA wasn't working so it became a bit close! Range listed was terrible and spot on. 60% of battery got me about 65 miles. I got home at ZERO, actually has a warning battery was depleted on my road but got it parked and charged back up just fine.

Even colder today! No more road trips.

And whoever said to turn the heat off clearly doesn't drive in -10 :)
Does EA not have an app that has a real time status of their chargers that can be checked from home to make sure they are online and even if available? Reviews on plugshare? Should be careful/sure about heading into the dark in an EV at those temps. Glad to hear it worked out.

Well it's not really "emergency heat". But I figured a discussion of thermal balance points was beyond the scope of this thread.

That’s what my father in law has in central MN north of brainerd. Seems to work well for them the last few years.

Can you cite a single of your 1,000s of article as well. Also one real world test that showed a 200 mile range in a model y with sub-zero temperatures?

Literally this very forum just last month. Not that I expect you to read or acknowledge it.
