Thought I would take a to look at the Pedestrian Speaker since there has been a few questions about it.

1. The back up beeping comes from the Pedestrian Speaker. 2. There is only one Pedestrian Speaker and that is up front under the front underbody shield. 3. When you disconnect it you get a warning that the Pedestrian Alert audio system is malfunctioning.

I do not want the back up beeping nor the Pedestrian Alert sound. I could replace the speaker with a resistor of the same impedance load or just block the sound. For now, I chose to block the sound. Four screws and the speaker grill comes off exposing the speaker. I cut a 3" cardboard circle and put it in the speaker grill and put it back on. I no longer hear the Pedestrian Alert noise and can barely hear the back up beeping in a quiet garage. Outside with low ambient noise you do not hear it at all. I am happy and done with that project.
Did you Ohm out the speaker while down there so we can know what resistor to add if we want to fully remove it?

If not, I’ll check mine. Hoping to get to it tomorrow.

Yes I did. 4.8 ohms and I forgot to mention that the cardboard I used was thin and heavy from a very strong little box. I cut three 3" disks and they filled up the gap in the grill between the speaker and grill. I also stuffed paper towels in the little enclosure so would absorb any rear audio from the speaker. After installing the underbody shield, now I can barely hear the backup beeping and only if you were in a very quiet garage.

I think that settles it. The backup beeper is probably just an afterthought added by somebody with a bright idea when the car was in design.
The 2019 Nissan Leaf has backup alert also.

Now we need someone still on the "inside" to ask him what happened for us. @macchiaz-o ? ?️‍♂
Sometimes @Kamuelaflyer and others exercise short term anger/frustration blocking. He may have forgotten to unblock a few of you.

Yeah, the forum has two-way blocking turned on as its default, which is pretty annoying. There are a few people blocking me that are active here. I see others replying to their posts and all the context is missing, causing needless confusion.

I regularly have to load discussions in InPrivate tabs to figure out what's happening.

Understandable. Ah well, I've moved on. But yes, the missing context is annoying - ignores shouldn't be 2-way, I feel. Especially when, as you mentioned, we can just check the page incognito to read all the missing posts.

Thanks for the info!

It's incredibly frustrating to follow discussions on here when you can't see what people are replying to. Ah well.

The best I can find would indicate a manufacturer or a distributor (IE: the American arms of foreign manufacturers) 49 U.S. Code § 30115 - Certification of compliance | U.S. Code | US Law | LII / Legal Information Institute (cornell.edu)

Those are the two categories of entities required to certify that a vehicle meets the NHTSA requirements. In another section, an individual selling a car other than for the first time (IE: used) is exempted from NHTSA requirements

Well, of course if you mow down a pedestrian you are probably in a liability nightmare anyway, and of course if you modify the car and it results in you killing someone a lawyer is going to have a field day. That applies to this speaker, painting your grill black when it was chrome, changing the tires, whatever. When an auto accident results in injury or death all bets are off regardless

But we are really getting into crazy territory to think that driving a Mach E with the pedestrian sound maker disabled would result in the loss of your drivers license. That, I am 100% confident of, would not happen in any state
Yes... if I remember, the INTENT of the rule was for legally blind pedestrian protection, not all pedestrians. A sighted pedestrian can see the vehicle about to mow him/her down anyway... no sound required, just like with any vehicle. The primary worry was a stopped or slowly moving vehicle, which could be almost totally silent, being a danger to the sight impaired.

His posts have re-appeared for me, so perhaps we're off the naughty list?

In which case, I guess, you can always honk, although that might really scare someone...

Thank you so much for posting what you found. This will be one of the first things I do when I get my MME.

Actually, even a sighted pedestrian can be caught by surprise by an electric vehicle. I’ve noticed, in parking lots, Toyota Priusii “sneak up” on me in “creep mode” on more than one occasion. Here’s an example - one of Elon’s “flawless Fully Self Driving” things is chugging down the driveway (or whatever) in “summon mode” and little Sarah is drawing her hopscotch pattern on the driveway. A Pedestrian Alert (even if it’s just Elon’s burps and vomit noises) at least gives Sarah a chance to get out of the vehicle’s way.
