In reality this is just a "wash" because back in July 2019, Tesla had dropped their cheapest models (S & X) from their lineup, effectively "raising" the starting prices by $4-$5k......

For reference: Tesla Drops Cheapest.....

Based on just gut feelings, I predict Ford drops prices by 10K to about 50K. With incentives, it will be in the 40K range, which is where analysts expect cheaper 2021 Model Ys to be.
I like the sound of that...

I don't see that happening. It would mean that the Mach-e is a flop. Or that the economy is entering a lengthy depression where all vehicle sales remain in the tank.

Bad vs worse. Neither cause is particularly appealing.

Well, now they're selling vehicles with bigger battery packs for less, so it isn't really a wash. You get more for the same money.

"Price war" within Tesla, anyway. Meaning, with the Y coming out, they know it's gonna hurt sales of the S, X, and 3 as buyers clammor for the Y instead.

I wouldn't read much more into it than that.
Delivery times for model 3, X, and S are down to 4 to 6 weeks, which is short. So the demand is lower now. Model Y is 8 to 12 weeks, so other models are getting the price reduction, which is probably temporary until more demand comes up.

Derp... forgot how much range has increased with those packs, 390 miles for $75k, not bad at all!

Selfishly, I want Ford to drop the MSRP of the AWD ER Premium to just below $55k. That’s the sweet spot for me in NJ and removes any doubt I have once it comes time to convert to an order.

Unfortunately I don't see Ford dropping prices on the Mach E unless a significant proportion of reservation holders back out...

And even then, only if they fail to sell off the lot.

Reservation cancellations just mean the cars go through the same sales process all their other vehicles do -- they end up on dealer lots and consumers shop for them that way. Which frankly, I prefer over this "ordering blind" process anyway.

And now the Model Y has dropped in price by $3000. The Performance Y now has a lower starting price than the Mach-E GT. That makes things sort of interesting.
I just saw this and I agree. I am a GT reservation holder, but for me the sweet spot would have been the LR AWD. The ER AWD MME was just a little on the slower side for me, so that made me go for a GT. This price drop actually makes the Y cheaper, even after tax credit, and more powerful than the MME equivalent (LR AWD vs ER AWD).

Theoretically, the GT will be cheaper than the Performance Y after tax credit. However, we haven’t seen how much the performance package will cost and whether Ford will nickel and dime us with option packages (glass roof, 360 camera, etc.). Additionally, I imagine the range will be better on the Y. I know that Tesla overstates but recent tests show the LR AWD Y getting 276 miles of range driving 70 mph in 100 degree weather (speed and temp can negatively impact range). This is higher than the MME’s target EPA range of 270 for the same trim (most likely based on ideal driving conditions

One other consideration is that Tesla’s battery day is 09/22. I’ve been told that sometimes tech announced at these events makes it into current models shortly after. Could we see upgraded range for the Y this fall/winter?

From a design perspective, the MME wins for me. I also like the dealer network for support. Additionally, Ford has Apple CarPlay. However, Tesla’s drop in price, better performance in the mid range trim, better range (with the possibility of higher range in the near future) could steal some MME reservation holders away (including me).

For me, the big things Tesla would need to get right would be better quality control (seems to happen the longer models are produced), offer a lease option with the Y, and include Apple CarPlay or a better way to play/control Apple Music from the main screen. Will these happen? I’m not sure. Are they reasonably doable? For sure.

Ford could also surprise us with a price drop and better than expected performance/range numbers too.

Where are the articles about Tesla having “marked up” the initial sales? Why have dealers when you can take the mark up yourself.

Of course Tesla fans will deny there was any mark up due to demand and say this is Tesla passing on savings ?...either way it goes with the view that overall Tesla demand is down.
