Charging options with a 10-30A dryer outlet

Pardon if this shows my lack of electrical smarts - Don't we need 50amp to use the Ford mobile charger?

And if the amperage is higher than 30, can you still run the dryer off of it?

From an amp standpoint, the Ford Mobile charger would be fine to use on a 40A circuit (it only draws 32A, or 80% of max). However, you wouldn't (or shouldn't) be putting a 14-50 outlet on a 40A circuit because other devices/chargers would try to draw a full 40A which is too much for that breaker for extended charging times.

Get a 50A breaker and make sure your copper is rated at the right gauge to support a 50A circuit with 14-50 outlet.

The electrician will know all of this.

I’m beginning to think that BEVs will require a rethink of utility circuits in garages. After market chargers for 1 vehicle like a Lightning could well pull over 40 amps which means a 50 or 60 amp breaker. And 6 or 4 gauge wire.

A lot of newer subdivision are coming with 14-50 plugs and they advertise them as "EV-Ready". They've already done the thinking

Consider how many miles driven per week on average ... You might be able to use the 120V mode of the mobile charger without problems?

It needs to be plugged into an outlet that isn't being shared with any other significant loads.



Unfortunately, as the renter he likely cannot claim this home improvement credit.

FYI - I asked my CPA about the tax credit, he said:

I see terms referring to consumer, primary residence, and purchaser claiming credit…..nothing specific to property owner vs renter.

I purchased the 24amp Splitvolt charger with the NEMA 14-30 plug. Plugged into my dedicated 30amp 14-30 dryer outlet (which is unused and next to my garage), I got 12.9 miles/hour charging speed from 46% to 100%. Not the most convenient, but seems to work just fine. 50amp circuit quotes are all right around $2k for my house.

Yes, I paid $279 for the Splitvolt. It's 24amp vs the 16amp Lecton. The Lecton is 5 feet longer, which i could use... The Splitvolt does not get warm, nor do the cables, it all seems to be just fine. I have a gas dryer, so I figure why not. At 13miles per hour, the 24amp is enough for my use case. I guess with the 32 you can get up to 21 mph.

$2k for the 50amp install, it's a messy job, the panel is on the outside of the house, on the other side of the house from the garage, they have go up on the outside, into the attic through the eve, across the house and back down, and then somehow get into the garage. If I go forward, I'd probably just mount the 14-50 outlet on the outside of my house (got the perfect spot for it), which honestly would be super convenient. But people say if I spend 2k, I should make sure it's inside... Also my panel is full, so they need to do some tandem breakers and stuff.

Thank you. I read the concern about electrocution if the grounding is not adequate. I called the electrician who installed my 240V dryer outlet, and he said that I'm good to go and that if this was the case, these companies selling the chargers would be out of business. The ratings for both chargers on Amazon are 4 1/2 stars. I decided to go with the Splitvolt.

That was my understanding as well, however it cost $500 to put a plug in vs splitvolt at 200 and change, just decided to do the plug given that there is a fed tax rebate also...all the best, if there is even a 0.01% chance of electrocution, I would think its worth $200 extra bucks...
