Pilot 4S and Continental ExtremeContact Sports are the current summer tire champs. The Contis are about 15-20% cheaper for 95-98% of the performance. And both have 30k mile treadwear warranties. Unheard of in max performance summer tire class.
So I just did a quick search on this, and this treadwear warranty means that the Pilot Sport 4S is warrantied to not be down to 2/32 in 30k miles, or else they replace them free? There's no way that the 4S on our cars will last anywhere near that long.

Has anyone any experience with this warranty on the 4S? Am I missing something about this?

Check out the warranty terms:

https://www.michelinman.com/auto/tires/michelin-pilot-sport-4-s

https://dcadprod.azureedge.net/b2c-...er-s-manual-warranty-mdw41156-august-2021.pdf

They exclude vehicle OEM supplied tires, tires that haven't been rotated every 8,000 miles or sooner, and a bunch of other things.

I’ve used the same 30K treadwear warranty on Pilot Super Sports and the Continental EC Sports. They pro-rate your wear and credit that % to new tires.

Example: my last set of EC Sports got 22K miles and I had proof of rotations, so, Discount Tire just divided the 22k miles by the 30k warranty and I ended up with a 26.6% discount on a brand new set. They handle the warranty approval with Conti or Michelin so it’s seamless and quick. If I had only gotten 15k miles I would have received a 50% credit towards a new set.

I have done warranties for Michelin when working for a tire wholesale supplier (I don't work for a wholesaler anymore). Michelin may be generous once, so I would try you have nothing to lose. Technically racing or abuse is not covered so YMMV I am not judging just FYI

Now what about road noise? Are summers just going to be inherently louder? If you’re fine with the performance of all seasons, are those better for road and longevity?

Getting toward the end on my stock p zero, checked through the forum to see what other guys are doing… $1000+ every six months for tires is brutal.

definitely don’t want to run all seasons, but fear I may have to.

I was leaning towards the Michelin 4S, but it seems those don’t get much better life than the p zero. Can anyone that’s run both offer opinion on tread wear versus the stock p zeros?
Hey Alex, while I didn't have my stock P Zero's on my GTPE longer than a couple hundred miles, you can see with your own experience and others that they don't last all that long. That said, I have run the PS4S's on my other cars and believe they will definitely last longer than the P Zero's. First I want to say in my personal opinion, I don't think there is a better summer tire out there (except the Cup 2's) than the PS4S's. They truly are an amazing tire.

Back to the longevity, while my Focus RS weighed 1300 lbs less than the Mach-E, I sold the car with 20K miles on it and the 275/30/19 PS4S's still had at least 30% tread left. My GT500 which also weighs less (by 900 lbs) has 5200 miles on the 315/30/20 F, 345/30/20 R PS4S's and they still look to be in good shape.

That said, if you are looking for a much longer longevity than 20K-30K miles, I would definitely think about getting all season tires which it seems like you are somewhat against. I've have tested the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4's and felt they were the closest to the performance of the PS4S's in an all season tire that I've experienced. I also know of friends as well as members here that run the Conti DWS 06 Plus's and have nothing but praise for them too. I don't think you can go wrong with either AS tire but between the two, if you want a bit more comfortable ride, quiet tire, I would go with the DWS 06 Plus.

Now what about road noise? Are summers just going to be inherently louder? If you’re fine with the performance of all seasons, are those better for road and longevity?
I've run quite a few different types of tires on the Mach-E and many other cars and all seasons have always been quieter and definitely will last longer than summer performance tires. That said, in my opinion, the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tire is one of the harsher riding, noisy all season tire I have ever experienced. I would definitely look at the Conti DWS 06 Plus UHP all season for a soother, quiet ride.

If you are looking for an even quieter tire, the current tire I am testing is the Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season Plus. Out of all the tires I have run on the Mach-E (Michelin's PS4S, Pilot Sport 4 SUV, Latitude Sport 3, Pilot Sport All Season 4 and Pirelli's P Zero, P Zero All Season Plus, Scorpion Zero All Season Plus) this sport truck/SUV Scorpion Zero All Season Plus tire is hands down, the smoothest riding, quietest tire out of all of them. I am extremely impressed with the overall ride quality of this tire.

Unfortunately, I didn't keep he Pirelli's long as I like changing out and testing tires. I have been running different staggered setups on the Mach-E since I got my Premium in Feb '21 (245/45/20 F, 275/40/20 R and 255/45/20 F, 285/40/20 R and 265/45/20 F, 295/40/20 R) and it's not always easy finding the same exact brand/type tire with the same diameter in two different sizes.

After having many wider tread sized tires which have given me larger diameters and sidewall sizes than the OEM tires, I have decided I like the OEM sizing the best (28.7" diameter, 4.3" sidewall height) but of course want a much wider tire. So I've ended up with 270/40/20 F, 315/35/20 R which gives me the exact same diameter and sidewall height as the OEM 245/45/20 tires.

While the Michelin Pilot Sport 4s is my favorite tire, I wanted to try the Pilot Sport 4 NO (specifically designed for the Porsche Panamera turbo hybrid). I read up on this tire and it has the same exact tread pattern and rubber compound as the PS4s but slightly softer sidewall and their acoustic foam inside. It is designed to be a softer riding, quieter PS4s. I am very impressed with this tire as it does handle just like a PS4s but is definitely smoother riding and quieter.

Thanks mark, great info. I am slowly trying to be OK with all seasons lol. If the Nittos don’t last long enough, I will probably check out those contis.

FWIW: Before I even got home from dealership, I moved to the Conti ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus Sport UHP on my MME Prem eAWD ER and am very pleased with all aspects of this tire. 245/50RZ19 (105Y) which is same rolling size as OEM 225/55R19. I do not track this car. Very quiet and good dry handling. Will use same tire (in correct size) on our Tesla M3 when replacing the 19" tire there. I have researched this tire extensively and it looks to pass all tests well. And it looks good. @markboris makes great comments above too.

I drive 'pretty hard occasionally'... and it's looking like I'll get about 20k miles out of the OEM Michelin Primacys on my Select.... My plan is to go +1 width with Michelin ps4s for summer tires as they are available in 245/45zr18 .

If you want to keep the same overall diameter - you’ll want to make sure you go 245/55r18 if you’re staying in 18”s as stated. If you go to 20” then 245/45r20 will be the same size.

245/45r18 are almost 7% different in diameter from factory

I want to stick with 18 because that's the dia that came on my Select. I moved factory tires to aftermarket summer wheels (Enkie TS-v), and put Vredestein snowtires on my factory wheels.

I do NOT want to go with bigger wheels and lower profile because the roads in NM are pretty bad, I have to drive on dirt/gravel roads, and I wanted to keep a fair amount of sidewall flex rather than super low profile.

I have pretty much decided the Michelin ps4s is the tire I want because of the summer traction and quiet ride, and I want a little more width of at least 245-255 for the summer mountain driving.... I don't see a size available that would be an exact match for factory, but would rather go slightly bigger than smaller as I need to maintain ground clearance for some of the rough roads I need to access job sites.

You missed my point completely then - your stated above size of 245/45r18 are 7% smaller in diameter. I’m only referring to your sidewall profile not your tread width. Go with the 245 width those are great!! Just make sure you verify fitment of the tire width on your factory rims, some 245 width tires are not rated to mount on 7” rims.

You’ll need at least 245/55r18 to keep factory diameter - the 45 side wall has a whole 1 inch less than sidewall than a 55. If you want actually go slightly bigger you’ll need to go with at least 55 or 60 profile in that 245 width to keep your needed ground clearance.

you missed MY point.... the summer tires are going on my Enkie wheels. 18" dia x8.5", so the 245 width will be great I think.

factory tires are 225/60, which is a 135mm sidewall....
ps4s are not available in 225/60-r18

I checked all available at
https://www.michelinman.com/auto/tires/michelin-pilot-sport-4-s?tyreSize=18

and the closest I can find is 255/45, the sidewall is only 115 mm, and a little wider than I really want for economy, as well as about 1" less ground clearance, which I'm not thrilled about which is why I haven't bought the tires yet.
Pilot® Sport 4 S Tires 255/45ZR18 (103Y) XL BSW

so this is pushing me back to the land of 'performance' all-season to get the profile I want... if I want to maintain ground cleance...
something like the Conti
EXTREMECONTACT DWS 06 PLUS , which comes in 245/55r18

So in an extremely round about way you agree and know that 45 side wall on an 18… copy. Good luck with what you end up with. I’ll stop sidelining @scoopman ’s thread.

Do you have any idea the widest I can go on the OEM GT PE wheels and still keep the OEM diameter and sidewall height to not effect range or have a risk of rubbing, etc.? I'd like to keep it uniform front and back and not have a staggered setup like yourself. I would just like them slightly wider as they seem so... skinny for a performance car.
