First, thanks for the different comments and explanations - I really appreciate it.
Second, to the “Press OK and chill” responses - yep, I knew I could do that. My question was along the lines of “why does Ford consider this to be so important that they’re expending lots of screen real estate and a warning dialog for it?” ?
Not just Ford but most (I've seen dozens in different brands) newer vehicles have a large warning in the driver's display for this.

Some of you guys don’t seem to grasp the issue. The problem isn’t the notification popping up when someone unbuckles - it’s that the notification stays on after the person who unbuckled leaves the car. Whatever weight sensors are involved aren’t very sophisticated. It’s a small gripe, but legitimate.

There’s a lot of legacy crap in this car, which crosses lots of models, which doesn’t work all that great. Here are a few more examples: the “rain sensing wipers” that sometimes trigger without a smidge of rain. The alarm interior motion sensors that cannot be fully disabled without covering them with tape.

The MME is an amazing car but it is still chock-full of crap from other models that doesn’t work perfectly.

There definitely are weight sensors in the back seat. If my son is in the back and puts any weight on the seat next to him, it will show the seatbelt alert. If it knows there is weight on the seat, why does it care if the seatbelt is unbuckled when there isn't weight on the seat anymore?

Its either the letter of the law or a army of lawyers. You as the driver need to acknowledge that you saw the warning by pressing OK. You may not like it but its probably as designed and not a bug.

Mine does this also if I let someone out of the back seat and don't shut the car off. If I let someone out of the backseat and restart the car it does not do this. For now I will just restart the car as it only take a second. Maybe @Ford Motor Company will find a way for the back seat to know there is nobody back there anymore and that's why the seatbelt is not engaged anymore.

Not a bug. It's across the whole fleet it seems. I'm in a 2022 F-150 right now and it does the same thing if I drop someone off.

Why not just hit "OK"? Takes less time than off and on. And you can be moving.

The NHTSA is expected to start requiring this feature in the next few years. At least I expect them to. A lot of manufacturers like to implement these things years before they’re mandated safety features. Also NCAP in Europe has some regulations on a rear seatbelt reminder though they don’t require sensors in the seats yet I think this is part of why we see this here too.

I think its a good feature for people that have kids. I’ts a minor inconvenience to push the OK button. Better than some that freak out until you restart the car or the seatbelt is re latched.

There are no rear seat sensors it just knows if the belt is latched or not.

As a terrible sidenote, a few weeks ago someone in my community lost a child because they unbuckled and fell out the window. Annoying or not, it's for safety.
