My typical morning commute to work routine is to open the right rear door and put my briefcase in the back seat. One recent morning, when I pushed the door button, the door and liftgate simultaneously opened!

The car is parked < 1 foot away from my garage door, so there wasn't enough time to stop it before the liftgate made contact. Luckily, the liftgate isn't dented, but there are two deep scratches in the paint.

This happened the morning after I had the car at the dealer to address a series of strange behaviors (center screen rebooting several times during a trip, the front and rear cameras sometimes staying on while driving, AWD temporarily not available messages, etc., etc.).

My dealer is very responsive and they are at a loss as to what to do also. I do not fault them at all as they are trying. I am to take it back in for them to look over, but needless to say this is very aggravating and I'm doubtful that Ford can address the issue.

In the meantime, see the attached picture for my solution. This not the type of experience that MME owners should have. I shouldn't have to explain to my friends why I have a piece of foam taped to my garage door.

I have an early build (Nov. 20) and I expected minor bugs and issues out of a first year car. However at 16 months and ~ 22K miles of ownership later, I never expected these types of issues.

One last rant - I also thought I'd have a functional frunk by now.

Sadly, many of us have been the victims of random in garage liftgate opens and I’ve never heard of a root cause or a fix, other than what you’ve done (which I still have to do (hangs head in shame))
Glad I’m not the only one complaining about the embarrassing) lack of a frunk release!

Could you be setting off the “foot activation” sensor by walking behind the car? I back into my garage so it isn’t an issue, but if I have to pull into a garage, I make sure to turn that feature off.

No, can't physically get between the car and the garage door to activate the liftgate. I was standing by the driver's side rear door, pushed the button to open the door, then both the door and liftgate simultaneously opened.

Interesting I had the same exact thing happen to me the other day. I opened up the drivers side back door and the tailgate opened up at the exact same time. Also since then my Kick to open has only worked once or twice but worked perfectly beforehand. I don't know if they are related or not but thankfully I am not parked somewhere that my tailgate could get damaged.

@Stormtrooper

Edited, I actually have mine happening on Video from my security camera...

GREAT! …that you have a video.
I hate being the guy who screamed Ford…. but @Ford Motor Company this seems to be glitch on the Matrix that deserves attention from the software/config gods.

I had the same issue and posted a video. I have two deep scratches. I went round and round with Ford chat on here and email. All they said is bring it to the dealer. We know what a dealer would say even after viewing the video, "it's operating normally, no faults found, no recalls or TSB". When I asked Ford Corporate what would be done if the dealer did say nothing found and they completely ghosted me on here and email. Each week I resent my email and nothing back from them after three months.

I'm actually looking into getting rid of the MME since the value with 20k miles is similar to what I paid (MSRP). I also received $13k+ in rebates so win win. I'm interested in the i4 and GV60. Unfortunately both don't have the federal rebate, and MSRP might be hard to get. I'm tired of the crappy - software, service, and PaaK on the MME.

This happened to me too in the last week. No damage. Opened the rear passenger door and the rear hatch opened at the same time.

Very interesting, you all say the liftgate sometimes opens simultaneously with a rear door? Curious if you are using PAAK or fob when this happens. And if the Mach-E was locked or unlocked before opening the rear door. I'm also curious if this happened after a recent software update.

There's no TSB, but I would recommend updating the RFA, BCM, and door modules if you have this issue.

FYI I recommend parking at least 12-18" away from your garage door if you have a 2021 with old software (no frunk button) in case this happens.

So you basically arm chair yelled at people and never actually took it to a dealer? And then further yelled about a scenario that possibly could play out but might not because you’re too lazy to just go to a dealer? What kind of train of thought is that? Not all dealers are bad guys, they just want to get PAID for warranty work. If you show them a video that it bugged like this, they can easily make the case to Ford and get it reimbursed.

But yeah, if you have an issue with either the i4 or GV60, the manufacturer will definitely tell you to bring it to their corporate service center and guarantee 100% that it’ll be covered under warranty LOL.

You don’t like it, sell it. Move on, I think it’s great that you’ll get close to what you paid for it.

If you can ...back into the garage for now. It also aids towing if the car borks.
