I think right now is a bad time to consider a new EV due to availability and outrageous dealer markups, hopefully that will get better next year, but not likely.

Anyhow, just based on specs and MSRP of the current and coming EV, I think the MME has a lot more competition but continues to be one of the better options.

If I was buying today and trying to compare roughly same price-point for an EV-SUV (I have a GT)
  • MME GT: +Looks, +handling, =Range, -Charging, -Bounciness, =performance
  • Ionic 5: +Charging, +V2L, =Range, -handling, -looks
  • EV6 GT: +Charging, +V2L, =Range, =Looks =performance
  • GV60: +Charging, +V2L, =Range, +performance -looks
Ones I would discard
  • V C40: -Range
  • BZ4X: -looks, -handling, -name :)
  • ID 4: -performance, -interface
Some newcomers are interesting
  • Fisker: +Price, =range, +charging, OK looks
  • Blazer: +Price, =range, =charge, OK looks
  • Ariya: =range, =charge, OK looks

Most "luxury" brands are significantly pricier or significant compromise for $ (BMW $$, Audi range/$, Jag range/$, MB $$)

Exciting news.

Regarding range, contrary to many reports out there, our EV6 and former Ioniq 5 far exceeded their EPA ratings. My SEL was EPA rated for ~256 miles, but here is the first leg of my first long highway trip in that car:

hwy.jpg

If this holds up for the GT, the right conditions could net 250+ miles out of it, which could be viable for drivers who are willing to break every 2 hours or so and travel through enough urban territory.

Regarding the battery size, interestingly my 91 kwh MME and former 75kwh (est. usable) Ioniq 5 both report roughly the same range on the GOM at 80% SOC. Not very scientific, since they evidently use very different calculation methods. But interesting.
Kia re-adjusted the 2023 EPA numbers to match reality much like Ford did with the Mach-E. The GT EPA number (205) is actually blended so on highways I'm expecting 170-180 miles to be honest. Sure if you drive stop and go on local roads you might get 240 miles but I drive 80% on highways and I plan to take the EV6 GT to Daytona, Sebring, and Starke.

EV6 Wind AND GT-Line RWD (19" wheels) are 310 miles in 2023 and the GT-Line AWD is 252 miles (20" wheels) and the Wind AWD (19" wheels) is 282 miles.

My GTPE was rated to be 260 miles... 230-ish is what I experienced at highway speeds and maybe if I drove at 40mph I could get 270. I saw 3.1 mi/kWh only once and averaged 2.6 mi/kWh which is exactly the EV6 GT efficiency is with 75 kWh usable and 206 miles of range.

Anyhow, it's a race to who shows up first - BMW i4 M50 or EV6 GT - for me. I have a BMW i4 M50 that's built and ready to board a ship.

If you are going to include GV60 Performance ($69K+) then you have to include the i4.

Real world range of the i4 with 20" summer tires with a 81 kWh usable battery is the same as the GV60 Performance with 75 kWh. The i4 with 19" will add 30+ miles of range.

I think it’s definitely true that the Model Y is a direct competitor in terms of market segment and market share… but what you get for the money (seems like a much worse value due to the price) just doesn’t make it look like a viable alternative.

Maybe I should have titled this thread “closest viable alternative” or “closest competitor in terms of value”.

Not sure if I’m describing it accurately, but it really seems like the I5 and EV6 are the closest viable alternatives to the MME from a value perspective, and it still looks to me like the MME comes out on top after two years!

What do you guys think will eventually dethrone the MME? I’m intrigued by Explorer EV.
I don't know if the Mach-E will be dethroned. Like the original Mustang, Ford really came up with an exceptional vehicle that punches far above its paper stats.

I think Chevy missed an opportunity by not making the Blazer EV the Camaro EV. From what I've read, the Camaro's future existence is already iffy, a reboot as a four door electric SUV would have made loads of sense and might have been a good competitor to the Mach-E.

I think the Hyundai/Kia EVs just simply aren't interesting enough to compete with the Mach-E. They'd seemingly go better head to head with something like the Blazer EV.

In terms of interesting vehicles, I think really only the Model Y is up there as a good competitor. The Fisker Ocean looks promising too if production takes off.

That’s an interesting perspective. Are they harder to find than an MME? My understanding is that all these EVs are hard to come by.
I haven’t seen one in a lot before. The wait time at a dealer that does msrp for ordering one is 2 years. Seems they’re having problems making them.

As far as Ford there’s a lot of 2022s hitting lots now that’s why dealer’s can’t demand outrageous prices anymore and why I was able to find one

The ID.4 has always had a lot of stock. I don’t know about others but I was scared of the software problems. so haven’t heard anything wrong with the q4 even though it’s the same car but I’ve seen those at dealers too.

I haven’t tried the Ioniq 5, but I did sit in the EV6.

The higher speed charging architecture is great. That said, three deal breaking observations for me:
  1. Very limited headroom in the back seat. I’m 6’3”. One of my sons is 6’4”. I could not sit up straight in the back seats. My bald head hit the ceiling. I’m not talking a gentle brush against the ceiling. This was solid head pushing up into the headliner, bending the neck, unacceptable for a sedan, let alone an EV/CUV ….bad headroom
this is why I removed the ev6 from my list.

Out the door price is why I removed the Model Y.

If you are going to include GV60 Performance ($69K+) then you have to include the i4.

oh I definitely think the i4 is a very good option in terms of EVs right now, specially the standard i4 (not M50) version at its price point, its a +looking, =range, +interior, =performance EV Sedan, but its not an SUV and the iX is way to expensive @ 84K+ starting MSRP

The starting MSRP of the EV60 is $59K btw, not $69K

I can’t get over how the grill looks for the i4 and the ix. I like how the i4 is a hatchback but no one makes a hitch for it.

Exactly. Huge missed opportunity on GM's part. That and waiting 3+ years to work out the details of the on-screen volume knob.

If I ran GM, their EV line would be Pontiacs.

Genesis GV60 ....test drove a rare one in Mahwah when recently I was in NJ and it was super awesome in all aspects: cabin luxury, ride characteristics, acceleration, 800v architecture, excellent NVH suppression ... and hyper fast charging !!! (but too many high tech gizmos). Pricing and performance comparable or better than GT,

The $59K GV60 Advanced is basically a unicorn. Never seen one advertised nor even a photo of one posted by an owner. So the $69K Performance trim is the only trim "available" in the US.

FYI... the i4 is a liftback/hatchback. It doesn't have the space of the Mach-E but cargo wise it's not much worse than the GV60 (which has shorter wheelbase than the other E-GMP cars).

The range of the base i4 RWD vastly exceeds the GV60 if you are going to use that as a comparison. 300+ is easy. It's almost Model 3 efficient.

GV60 checks all the boxes for me and hopefully they arrive in FL so I can test one out.

But currently... QC issues abound.

I've never seen a new EV with so many small random problems. It sort of reminds of the Model S issues my friend had. Low volume production EVs may have not the same QC high-volume mass-produced ones have.

Personally, I found the Kia EV6 to be the closest competitor. It was almost a flip of the coin which I got between the MME & EV6, and ultimately came down to not wanting to pay the ADM on the EV6.

I have a friend to ended up getting an EV6 at almost the same time I got my MME, but then got rear-ended about a week later, and so has been waiting on repairs for months. This just means that we can't do a good comparison yet.

I think if Chevy killed the 2-door ICE Camaro and replaced it with a 4-door EV SUV, we'd see even more whining from diehard muscle cars fan than we did when Ford decided to come out with the MME.
