When someone asks me - How many miles to the gallon do you get?

My answer is
Gas is now 2.99
My electric off peak is .08473 (NC)
I get 4 miles per kw

So that would mean 2.99 divide by .08473 = 35.288

Then multiply 35.288 by 4 = 141.152
or even
Then multiply 35.288 by 3 = 105.864

My answer is how many mpg does your car get? 30
Well for that same price of gas I get between 105 to 141 miles.

I say "about 4 1/2 to 5 cents a mile" and leave it at that. Let them do their own math.

I find that most people that want to "discuss" EVs have no clue and any discussion is pointless.

I convert everything to $/mile. For me, I am on a TOU rate from Duke so my marginal/charging rate is $0.054/kWh and I average ~2.8 mi/kWh so my $/mi is 0.02/mile. In any of my ICE vehicles I get 20-25 miles per gallon (currently $3/gallon) so they cost ~$0.12-0.15/mile.

I usually include all the utility junk fees in the total. Thus total bill/Total kWh = 13.5 cents per kWh for me. It still comes out to less than 5 cents a mile.

Only 1 person has asked about mpg, and my answer was simple: "I don't use any gasoline." The response from the person was "Nice". His education in EVs was just beginning!

I drop those out because in my case it there are $14 in facility charges but I pay that to have electricity to the house so the only amount that is relevant is the rate at night when I charge.

Yeah I wouldn't engage more than necessary unless they actually seemed interested in getting an EV. I have found from family members they will pick at any negatives (like road trip range/charging) even if those situations aren't a factor for them in reality because they rarely road trip more than 100 miles and only do that a couple times a year. So if someone randomly asked me mileage I would just keep it simple and see what path they take it from there. If they ask something like, "have you noticed a big change in your electric bill?", then we can get into the cost discussion.

But if they just go "bet you hate all that time spent charging", would just leave the conversation altogether. I am all for discussion and debate, love it, but the other person needs to come into it with at least the willingness to listen.

I tell them it goes "about" 300 miles, and costs me ~$8.00 to "fill up the tank". I'm in SoCal so don't see too much loss in range here during winter so I don't discuss that, esp if it's just a surface level convo.

Unlimited in town. I have free electricity (either nights or weekend) so I charge for free.

I used to say, same as you, but my fuel costs $1.80/gal..

Unfortunately, rate increase has pushed that to $3.40/gal. for me. So it now it costs more to fuel an EV than an ICE in New England.

I charge off our solar system when the system batteries are full. The number of times I’ve had to pay for electricity for the car over the past 20 months can be counted on two fingers.

EQUATION:

Gas Price * Mach-E miles per kWh / Electric Cost per kWh

Keep in mind the EPA estimated range of 270 miles for MachE ER AWD assumes basically 3 mi/kWh.

Example in Colorado NOW:

$2.79 * 2.7 / $0.125 = 60 MPG gasoline cost equivalent

Example in Colorado at worst gas prices in history and good EV range in June 2022:

$4.99 * 3.5 / $0.14 = 124 MPG gasoline cost equivalent

Do you "spend a lot of time charging" your cell phone? No, you do it at night, usually. Same with the car. But if you go, say, on vacation, and you're going to use your phone more, you might need to find a way to charge middle of the day. Same with the car. But that's the exception, not the rule.

That's been my approach with my family. I then give them some examples of trips we might take, and that for those, charging is optional and only for convenience rather than need.

As for the cost, I tell them that it's costing about $6.50 to run the car for a week.
