We own a 2021 AWD MME. Just curious if anyone has any experience with a rattle originating from in the front dash area that occurs on semi-rough roads at fairly high speeds (40-70 MPH)? And what the fix might be. I did ask the dealer to resolve, along some other issues, but of course they couldn't duplicate it. In all honesty it is hard to duplicate as only occurs under special experiences (high speed-rough roads). So I thought would ask the forum if anyone else has experienced a similar issue and if they found a way to resolved it. The MME is typically so quite, it is really annoying.

Heh. I have a rattle as well - same MY and trim - in the area of the sunglass holder. Comes around this time of year, tends to disappear in the winter. I suspect this is from something expanding/contracting but I have zero solutions so far. I bang it, press on it, leave the holder open, keep it closed.

Nada.

I would pay good money to never hear it again. Like you, I took it to a dealer and they couldn’t replicate. Maddening.

I just starting hearing a rattle yesterday while driving over rough roads and bumps. I too suspected the sunglasses holder but removed my glasses and it persisted. Then I noticed the trim around the edges of the front center console ( it’s the shiny black piano trim in my Premium model in front of the shifter dial) seemed loose and when I tapped it with my palm the rattle seemed to go away. Anyone else notice the trim coming loose?

I have a 2021 premium and I hear the rattle too. Always assumed it was the sunglasses but never bothered looking into it. I just got used to it I guess.

Next time this happens, if it is safe, firmly grip the small instrument panel (not the big screen), perhaps nudging it in some direction. If the rattle goes away, your car is like mine. In my case, the sound is pretty minor and ignorable. (This is not the same thing as the instrument electrical buzz that has been widely discussed in this forum, and I don't intend to restart that discussion in your thread...)

If I ever want to fix it, I would get a few scraps of a mechanically-lossy rubber (think viton, not silicone rubber) and gently wedge them into the gap with a probe.

In my 2021J1, the large screen rattles in a certain speed range. Noise goes away, if I hold the screen firmly.
Not sure if anyone knows if any screws can be tightened to fix it.

I wonder if it's the same sound, our late 2022 MME is perfect across the board with the exception of a rattle that comes from the driver side dash. I have tried a bunch of stuff to find what is causing it, holding different trim pieces and looking around under the dash (since it's surprisingly open under there) but can't find the cause.

As noted in the OP, we notice it most on rougher roads, and above 40 MPH. While turning up the radio largely drowns it out, that is less and less a thing when we drive the MME because we may be trying to have a conversation or just listening to a podcast or whatever, and you lock onto the sound.

I sure would love to find the cause. It definitely isn't the sunglass holder and I have tried holding the instrument screen but no change. It definitely sounds like it's deeper in the dash. I know we could take it to our dealer and they have been outstanding on this the couple other times over the years we have had a rattle, but it's just low enough and infrequent enough that so far it isn't worth the hassle of being without the car for potentially a few days just to get it resolved, but still annoying enough I would LOVE to find the cause.

I can also hear the rattle from somewhere behind the instrument cluster, but it's definitely not the screen itself. I think it's from the plastic trim on the dash. It comes and goes at random times, but I think it gets worse with time. For me it occurs even at low speeds, especially on rough roads, though even a little bump on a good road is enough to hear the rattle.
I also have a rattle somewhere in the driver-side B-pillar area. It could be the B-pillar itself or the driver's door, I'm not sure.
Some day I'll probably take the car to the dealership with these issues but for now, I'm just trying to ignore it since I'm not really convinced that they know how to fix that.

Thanks for all the replies. It seems a few people have had the same or very similar issue. Mine isnt with the instrument panel (small or large) or the sunglasses area. It seems as Vulnox mentioned deep in the dash. I will explore the trims around the dash, as haven't done this yet. I have asked my wife climb under the dash while driving 50MPH on rough road and poke around. Haven't convinced her yet :)

Sometimes I wonder if maybe coming from the Frunk area close to the windshield. I'll keep exploring, if someone finds the cause, please holler. But agree not a really huge issue as I don't experience rough high speed roads too often.

I’ve had the sunglass holder rattle from time to time. Definitely comes and goes.

I do have to laugh at the ad that showed up on this thread.

Apparently the AI advertising bots think you may have a MOUSE in your car!

I experienced the same thing. And it turned out to be the water bottle hold with a water bottle in there.

I had two buzzing rattles, but not screen buzz. When I pulled gently on the large screen, it stopped, so I used a piece of black plastic from a Chinese carryout container between the dash and the screen and that took care of that. A photo is on this forum somewhere.

The other did not respond to the same treatment, but I suspect it's just not thick enough. It's slightly right of the steering wheel opening between two pieces of trim. If I get my fingernail in between it stops. It's also temperature sensitive as it needs to be over 40 degrees to start the annoying rattle.
The dealer was willing to take the dash apart, but I didn't take him up on that offer as I was worried they would make something worse.
