Does it warm the battery if not plugged in? I have a 2023 Select. Departure times are cumbersome for me as my use varies a lot. Not too interested in conditioning the interior as I live in Alabama, for example this AM it’s 37 F. Would turning on say 30 min before driving help range?

If not plugged in, it just warms the cabin.

If you know you're going on a trip in a bit, just set the departure time on the phone.

I do wish they had a "pre condition now" feature..

Just starting the car doesn't warm the battery, no. So you don't want to warm the inside if it's 37 degrees?

Does the battery go up a few degrees just sitting there? Yes. Will it help your range? No.

Anything it does while not plugged in would have to use battery power. That's the opposite of improving range. The whole point of preconditioning to improve range is to use grid power so that you don't have to sacrifice battery power to bring things up to temp.

In a similar vein....if my car is sitting at 80% charge and I ask it to charge to 100% but take off when it reaches 90%....is the battery conditioned?

You can set a departure time to pre-condition the battery and simply set the "Cabin temperature" setting to "Off".

I also usually have two - a scheduled one and another one I use on the fly. As long as I have an hours or two I'll use my ad-hoc one.

Not necessarily “conditioned” but the battery would be warmed up by whatever amount of heat is produced by the charging process. I have no idea what that is for L2 charging. Preconditioning, obviously, uses the heating system to bring the batteries up to a certain temperature. I suspect that temp is greater that that which you would achieve by charging an additional 10kW.

The heat from charging is almost nil, so charging alone will not precondition the battery if you just bump up the charge target.

Thanks! I was not sure about that and could not recall reading anything. I knew it could not be much or I would have seen it as a conditioning strategy.

I do try to set departure time if I know a time. It is just a hassle. Then I have to remember to turn it off. Guess took 3 years for drunk button to work. Maybe 3 years more they could add pre condition button.

Assuming the answers are accurate (I have no reason to think they are not) this makes the case for a dedicated precondition toggle for us Canadians and northern States dwellers as I have a departure time for morning and one for end of day and would not want to mess with those for unscheduled trips.

In addition to all the other comments here, let me just add that when you turn the vehicle "on", be sure to press the brake (that is, put it in the On mode rather than the Accessory mode). While you can do most of the same things in either mode (except drive, obviously), Accessory mode doesn't charge the 12V battery.

I realize you likely already know this, but I thought I'd add this comment since your question is about "just turning on the Mach E.

Don’t assume I know much lol, only owned an EV a few months and the official documentation seems a little sparse. Thanks!

That has been requested of Ford since 2021...
