Hi. Has anyone else had an issue with arcing or sparking when removing their charger (EVSE) nozzle from the port? It happens every time and I’m not sure if it’s the car or charger and it’s just not right. I charge it to 90%, squeeze the button on the handle to unlatch it and even after the blue wheel light was off on my car it lights back up up and a tiny jolt comes out of the nozzle. This feels unsafe. I’ve brought to dealership and they have no clue and couldn’t replicate it with their EVSE. I’ve gotten a replacement j1772 EVSE and same thing happens. Installed (hard wired) by a wonderful master electrician who does this for a living.
Thanks for any insight-

this appears to be an EVSE issue - it must de-energize the AC pins when the locking latch is pressed down and that would be the most likely source of the arcing.

what brand and model is the EVSE? is the dealership EVSE the only other one you've used?

i've seen this as well, it's because the tesla J1772 doesn't seem to stop when you press the button. you should pause charging from the car before you pull plug to avoid this

What's "Tesla"? Are you using the Tesla charger with an adapter? If so, what adapter? If so, yes, people have noted that.

The latch function is indirect. Pressing it tells the car to disengage from the pilot signal. When the EVSE senses no pilot connection, it shuts off. This all happens instantly so not readily observable.

again this doesn't seem to be true for the tesla j1772. the button on the j1772 just seems to be for the latch clip -- in fact the NACS version has no release button

@RickMachE i assume OP is talking about the tesla wallcharger with the J1772 plug and/or a J1772 adapter

The way I read it, he’s got a universal Wall Connector, but you’re right, it’s not perfectly clear.

Perhaps….I have no experience with Tesla EVSEs.

It’s definitely the EVSE not the car. It’s weird because that looks like a static discharge?

The car is stopping the charge. When you press the latch, you should hear your EVSE clunk instantly when it shuts off the power.

Thank you, all. Going to go back and re-read your comments. It’s a Tesla J1772 EVSE — designed specifically for non-Teslas. No adapter. The only workaround I’ve found is to go into Ford App and select “charge to 100%” then stop it, which means I have to give it 5 minutes before I leave. Pain. Shouldn’t be.

Yes. Only used dealership EVSE. Going to a friend’s house this week to try theirs. But my electrician has the Mach E as well and he brought it to my house to try, and it replicated

Pressing the latch button does nothing for me but allow me to unlatch it.

Therein lies the problem. Pushing the latch button is supposed to stop the charging session.

Further, if the charging session is over, no juice should be flowing.

correct, it's just how tesla designed it with minimal foresight. to be fair to them their own cars don't seem to have this problem.

i even tried things like pressing the release button on the car, it doesn't help. the EVSE itself is button-free, another great tesla design. you could pull the disconnect if you want / have one nearby :p
