Thank you, all. Going to go back and re-read your comments. It’s a Tesla J1772 EVSE — designed specifically for non-Teslas. No adapter. The only workaround I’ve found is to go into Ford App and select “charge to 100%” then stop it, which means I have to give it 5 minutes before I leave. Pain. Shouldn’t be.
Come to think of it, my original WallConnector (the j1772 version as well) would arc when unplugging quickly. I don't remember my replacement doing it but it was only installed a week before it too was replaced with an Emporia.

this appears to be an EVSE issue - it must de-energize the AC pins when the locking latch is pressed down and that would be the most likely source of the arcing.

what brand and model is the EVSE? is the dealership EVSE the only other one you've used?
I have only used this (Tesla J1772 EVSE) and the dealership’s EVSE. Going to a friend’s house this week to try theirs. Electrician brought his Mach-e here as well, and it arced on his too. This makes me think it’s the EVSE

I should have just gotten the Emporia! Did you get it because the Tesla arced?

I got it because my MME mislead me to think the Tesla couldn't take the AZ heat (which it actually can't). I suffer from the L2 de-rating as well. That's what caused me to get it replaced by Tesla a month after I installed it. The Emporia was my 'fix' for the derate as I could push the amperage around live rather than have to re-commision the Tesla. My WallConnector will be sold or I'll set it to 24amps and use it up north where I don't want to sling 80+ ft of 4awg wire to charge. I think the WallChargers issue is it doesn't shut down fast enough after you click the release. It does have a switch in it and I can hear it kick off/down but power is still flowing somewhere causing the arc.

Hi. Has anyone else had an issue with arcing or sparking when removing their charger (EVSE) nozzle from the port? It happens every time and I’m not sure if it’s the car or charger and it’s just not right. I charge it to 90%, squeeze the button on the handle to unlatch it and even after the blue wheel light was off on my car it lights back up up and a tiny jolt comes out of the nozzle. This feels unsafe. I’ve brought to dealership and they have no clue and couldn’t replicate it with their EVSE. I’ve gotten a replacement j1772 EVSE and same thing happens. Installed (hard wired) by a wonderful master electrician who does this for a living.
Thanks for any insight-
JZ

Can you try something for me? Can you shut off the breaker so the Wall Connector is dead, then plug in the car and unplug it again to see if it still sparks?

It almost looks like static discharge to me. If the EVSE was staying on it would be arcing by the socket pins rather than on the edge of the circle.

i didn't realize it was a video, actually when you pressed the button the ring on the car turned white which means it stopped charging... maybe rick is right

alternatively, wait a bit longer. let the ring turn white, wait 2 sec, then pull

i've seen this as well, it's because the tesla J1772 doesn't seem to stop when you press the button. you should pause charging from the car before you pull plug to avoid this
Thanks. Correct. The button does not make it stop. It simply unclips it. Was trying to find a way around that. Just disappointed.

just a clarification:

pressing the release on the EVSE nozzle signals to the car to stop charging in an orderly manner. this is supposed to happen on the order milliseconds - not seconds.

from your video, it appears this is happening correctly since the blue ring turns to white before you pull the nozzle off.

as @Mach-Lee notes above, you might de-eneregize the tesla EVSE and see if the arcing occurs without AC power supplied.

The button is doing something, the ring goes from blue (charging?) to White (sparking?)
Funny enough mine did that ringing noise as well. I can't hook mine back up as it's in a box though. And I did get all the things reprogrammed due to the charger derating.
