OK, some of that is confusing. Are "Phone As A Key" and FordPass not the same thing?? Is there a different PAAK app?

The 131 foot limit is curious. I assume that must be a bluetooth connection then? I hope that doesn't apply when using FordPass. That would defeat the whole purpose.

Alternatively, if your schedule isn’t that regular you could just turn on climate control from your phone when you start packing up to leave. That should heat/cool the interior and condition the battery for driving.
This is what I do with my Clarity as I don't have a set time to leave for work each day. I give it 10 to 15 minutes to warm up and I get into a toasty car. Not sure if it does anything for its battery but, as a PHEV, it is not as vital.

My 2017 LincolnPass app can remote start the vehicle from any distance, as long as the car is sitting in range of a cell tower.

I don't know anything about "Phone as a Key", but it sounds like it will actually let you drive away if the car detects your phone to be at close range (inside the car). Hopefully built into FordPass in such a way that it tries to find the car via bluetooth first, and then otherwise sends a message to the car over the internet/modem to remote start.

Hopefully built into FordPass in such a way that it tries to find the car via bluetooth first, and then otherwise sends a message to the car over the internet/modem to remote start.
I had that thought too, but if so, then that's worded really poorly in the manual. "You can also use the FordPass App" implies you're not already using the FordPass App.

I think the distinction is: Phone as Key is bluetooth and Ford Pass is via internet (cellular modem).

I'm guessing they both use the Ford Pass app but just the way they decided to describe it in the owner's manual.

Check out pages 117 and 118 of the owner's manual. Looks like remote start is very configurable.

This is how I've always interpreted it as well. You could still use PaaK without cellular connection so long as your phone is within bluetooth range of your car (just like a traditional keyfob).

My concern about phone as key is when at home our phones sit at the desk charging directly over where the car will park and charge outside. Could be problematic.

PaaK works just like your keyfob would - if having the keyfob in that same place hasn't been an issue before, it shouldn't be with PaaK.

I think perhaps he's talking about the phone being in close proximity to the car, and therefore constantly trying to connect and communicate with the vehicle. He's probably wondering if this causes battery drain. Just guessing though.

Where I hope to use it more is on the other end -- when we're getting ready to leave a restaurant, or Costco, etc.
I remember restaurants and Costco back in the good ol' days. looking forward to them again.
Remote starting has a time limit (15 or 30 minutes) so an hour later you'll think "oh crap we left the car on" go out and find a cold car because it shut off and cooled down.

Indeed the resistive heater heats up quickly but uses a ton of electrons in the process. (On the Focus Electric it would burn at 5kW rate while on full blast.)
That's the max draw on the sticker of the Focus's heater?

From info search a 5 KW rating appears to be common. That is why it is best to blast it plugged in one would think. Once you are going you normally turn the blower/heat down. The magic -20 oC when heat pumps are not much good and range becomes important.

If no heat pump system is available:

Around 20C - 0W
Around 10C - 300W
Around 0C (freezing point) 1000W
Around -10C - 2000W
Around -20C - 3000W

With heat pump:

Around 20C - 0W
Around 10C - 100W
Around 0C (freezing point) 200W
Around -10C - 700W
Around -20C - 3000W

Nope, talking about getting home and parking the Explorer in the street, coming in the house an plopping the phone on the charger and having it unlock the Mustang siting outside the window in the driveway without me knowing.

It will need to be closer than that to passively unlock.

I won't be needing that option. Car stays in the garage at home. That's the only place I'd consider leaving windows open (locked in the garage) but no need to there. When parking it outside anywhere I'll want it all locked up.
True but I can see the value of opening the windows as I walk out through a parking lot rather than opening the door to dump heat.
