2) You seem to only be giving the battery credit for roughly 3 miles per kWh. Again, just a guess, but I would expect much improved efficiency from this new, lighter platform, hoping for 4+mi/kWh.
I doubt you will get 4mi/kwh from a truck doing highway speeds due to poor aerodynamics. Weight improvements don't help much when compared to the aerodynamic drag at 65-70 MPH.

Over the weekend I was looking at "cars" in a restaurant parking lot from a window... out of a couple hundred vehicles we could see, there were hardly any car height vehicles... on the drive home, there was a span of over 30 SUVs in oncoming traffic before there was a "a couple model 3's and some BMWs. Everything else was a tall vehicle. Mostly 2 row SUVs and trucks.

So..... are "cars" are an ignored segment, or are they simply history?
There’s still a market for sedans. Honda sells a lot of civics, Toyota sells a lot of Camry and corollas, I see Mazda 3 on the road, I see sonatas and Elantra’s on the road. GM can put millions aside for R&D to create a 6 figure EV that even they know won’t be a volume seller but Ford can put some money towards hybrid sedan?

We don't need more trucks, Ford. Ford used to sell a Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Mustang, mini van, small SUV, compact SUV, mid-size SUV, large SUV, gigantic SUV and more trucks than I can count. Now Ford only sells the Escape, Bronco, Mustangs and more trucks than I can count. The other day I saw a very effective Toyota ad which showed a car carrier that went on and on with well over a dozen vehicles of all varieties. But I guess US auto makers think we only want trucks, trucks, trucks. Over the years I have bought or leased over 50 Ford sedans and SUVs. Now my next car will have to be from some Japanese automaker who has not abandoned the US CAR market.
And sadly they no longer make the Escape. In fact, Louisville was where the Escape was built. Would love to see an EV replacement for the Escape. Perhaps by 2028? (I feel GM is going to own this segment in the EV space with the Equinox and Ford better watch out).

To those complaining that it's a truck (at least the first model):

Non-truck/SUV sales in the US have been declining for decades. People in this country voted with their wallets saying they like sitting up high and having room to haul kids + their stuff. I'd love to see an actual sports car/sedan EV but my empty-nester situation is just not the bulk of the market.

Ford canned sedans and coupes (outside of the Mustang) 5+ years ago around the same time Chevy did. They aren't coming back any time soon.

There's a huge gulf between a truck and a crossover or even an SUV.

Hi Mustang Mach-E forum folks - fresh news from Ford today.

The TLDR;
  • Betting on America: Ford is investing approximately $5 billion and creating or securing nearly 4,000 jobs across Louisville Assembly Plant and BlueOval Battery Park Michigan to deliver a new pickup and produce advanced prismatic LFP batteries.
  • Ford Universal EV Platform: New platform enables a family of affordable vehicles to be produced at scale for customers – electric, fun to drive and digitally advanced with over-the-air updates that will keep improving the vehicle.
  • Breakthrough product: The first will be a midsize four-door electric pickup with a targeted starting price of about $30,000, assembled at Louisville Assembly Plant and reaching customers in 2027. As fast as a Mustang EcoBoost. More passenger space than the latest Toyota RAV4 – with a frunk and a bed
  • A better assembly line: More than a century after the invention of the moving assembly line, Ford combines its industrial know-how with a start-up mentality to create the new Ford Universal EV Production System, radically simplifying vehicle assembly for safety, quality and speed.

Ford is once again taking a revolutionary leap forward in engineering and manufacturing to bring a new family of affordable, high-quality electric vehicles within reach for millions around the world.

The new Ford Universal EV Platform and Ford Universal EV Production System introduced today were born from a team that combines the discipline, expertise and scale of a company with 122 years of experience with the speed, innovation and first-principles thinking of a California-based electric vehicle hardware and software skunkworks team.

The result: a simple, efficient, flexible ecosystem to deliver a family of affordable, electric, software-defined vehicles – the first of which is a midsize, four-door electric pickup that will be assembled at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant for U.S. and export markets. Its launch is scheduled for 2027.

The Ford Universal EV Platform
The numbers tell the story, Farley said. The platform reduces parts by 20% versus a typical vehicle, with 25% fewer fasteners, 40% fewer workstations dock-to-dock in the plant and 15% faster assembly time. Lower cost of ownership over five years than a three-year-old used Tesla Model Y.

Take for instance the wiring harness in the new midsize truck; it will be more than 4,000 feet (1.3 kilometers) shorter and 10 kilograms lighter than the one used in our first-gen electric SUV. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic batteries also enable space and weight savings, while delivering cost reduction and durability for customers. The platform’s cobalt-free and nickel-free LFP battery pack is a structural sub-assembly that also serves as the vehicle’s floor. This low center of gravity improves handling, creates a quiet cabin, and provides a surprising amount of interior space.

The new midsize truck is forecasted to have more passenger room than the latest Toyota RAV4, even before you include the frunk and the truck bed. You can lock your surfboards or other gear in that bed – no roof rack or trailer hitch racks required. But it’s not just about space and utility. Ford makes passion products – and this electric vehicle platform with a low center of gravity from the battery, instant torque from electric motors and obsessive chassis engineering will make it fun to drive. The midsize truck will have a targeted 0-60 time as fast as a Mustang EcoBoost, with more downforce.

Additional specifications for the midsize electric truck – including reveal date, starting price, EPA-estimated battery range, battery sizes and charge times – will be communicated later.

The Ford Universal EV Production System
The Ford team obsessed about efficiency in manufacturing, too, transforming the traditional assembly line into an “assembly tree”. Instead of one long conveyor, three sub-assemblies run down their own lines simultaneously and then join together. Large single-piece aluminum unicastings replace dozens of smaller parts, enabling the front and rear of the vehicle to be assembled separately.

The front and rear are then combined with the third sub-assembly, the structural battery, which is independently assembled with seats, consoles and carpeting, to form the vehicle.

Parts travel down the assembly tree to operators in a kit. Within that kit, all fasteners, scanners and power tools required for the job are included – and in the correct orientation for use. The Ford Universal EV Production System dramatically improves ergonomics for employees by reducing twisting, reaching and bending, allowing them to focus on the job at hand.

Because of the integration between the Ford Universal EV Production System and Platform, assembly of the midsize electric truck could be up to 40% faster than Louisville Assembly Plant’s current vehicles. Some of that time will be reinvested into insourcing and automation to improve quality and cost, ultimately netting a 15% speed improvement.

Continued Investment in American Manufacturing
Ford builds on its strong legacy of investing in U.S. vehicle assembly, planning to invest nearly $2 billion in Louisville Assembly Plant to assemble the midsize electric truck, securing 2,200 hourly jobs. The project is supported by an incentive offer from the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority.

Louisville Assembly Plant will expand by 52,000 square feet in order to move material more efficiently. Digital infrastructure upgrades will give Louisville Assembly Plant the fastest network with the most access points out of any Ford plant globally, enabling more quality scans.

Ford’s investment in Louisville Assembly Plant is in addition to its previously announced $3 billion investment in BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, which will build the prismatic LFP batteries for the midsize electric truck starting next year. Together, the investments total approximately $5 billion, and between the two plants, Ford expects to create or secure nearly 4,000 direct jobs while strengthening the domestic supply chain with dozens of new U.S.-based suppliers.

I'll do my best to answer what questions I can.

Brian
How repairable are the unicastings going to be? I've heard horror stories from Tesla.

Yeah really! I mean seriously, Ford has been putting multiple vehicles on the same platform forever! The latest coming to mind is the Bronco/Ranger Pickup. Just a few years back the Taurus, a sedan, was same platform as the Explorer, an SUV. @Ford Motor Company where the heck is this “Model T Moment”? What a joke of an announcement! 🙄

Nevertheless, sedans and coups are dead (I wouldn't be surprised if the 2-door Mustang is soon to be retired)

'25 Model T owner here. The Winged Pyramid logo is a sincere tribute to the "Car which put America on wheels". Very appropriate. Henry is looking down from heaven and is very proud of his legacy.

I really wish they would make the truck a 2 door with a king cab and longer bed. I had the first year Maverick Hybrid that I didn't need so much internal space. My city job we have many Lightnings that would be much better for work with less internal space and a longer bed.

The announcement is indicative that EVs provide vehicles with fewer moving parts, that can be produced in less time and that can be cost competitive compared to ICEs. My dad, uncle and brother worked at the San Jose, CA assembly plant. I did also a couple summers when in college to make summer money. Just consider all the parts ICE vehicles need; in the engine, transmission, under the hood, the drive shaft, universal joints, starter, alternator, etc. The orange guy who is trying to kill EVs is fighting ignorantly against manufacturing progress.

I get it. It makes sense but if other auto makers can still offer sedans and still spend money to keep them updated and refreshed, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia then ford can at least offer one. Hell they even got rid of the Edge and apparently may do away with the escape soon so not every SUV is king.

Ford could do that now… if it reduced the battery size. The rumors I’m hearing about a 65kWh pack - in a small truck = about 200mi range. Or 150mi true highway range. Lol nobody wants that.

Keeping my paid off 2021 MME for another 5 years never looked so good. Get back to me when you’ve got a new car that actually has new and significantly improved battery and charging tech.
The quote in one of the articles:

"Compared to a generation one electrical vehicle, we can get the same range with a third less battery," Doug Field, Ford's EV chief"

Good to see that they can improve mi/kwh. That would be like taking the Mach-e battery size down to about 70kw and getting the same 300 miles range - even though it's not on this new platform etc

I agree

If you take Tesla's model 3 and see they stretch it to make a model y or Toyota Corolla and now they have the Corolla cross. Toyota sells plenty of Corollas and Camrys in striking distance of the RAV4. They are probably about a third less sales then the RAV4 when I looked it up. But they aren't sneezing at selling 300,000 sedans just because they sell 450,000 Rav4's.

I believe there's still a market for affordable sedans and if they just build it where it shares a majority of parts with the crossover they want to sell.

Especially if they're trying to make an affordable EV, the sedan is smaller and lighter would be easier to get to 300 miles range and cost a few bucks less than the crossover.
