I recently was backing out of my garage in reverse and accidentally hit the On/Off button and the car abruptly stopped as though it went into park. Felt bad and I hope I didn’t break anything. This got me wondering what would happen if this occurred while moving fast. I would hope if I was moving at high speed and accidentally hit the button nothing would occur. Any thoughts about this button and behavior?

thanks

At higher speeds i would assume the car would ignore it, probably only worked since you were at such a low speed. Just a guess here..

And since there is no transmission to go into "park" all it did was apply the rear brakes abruptly, nothing to worry about.

I believe there is a parking pawl in the transaxle. At least there was in the 2021s. ??

According to this thread the car doesn’t ignore it and reacts as though it’s an issue telling the driver pull over and restart. At least it isn’t a safety concern per say.

Also as for a parking mechanism that brings up an interesting thought does the car have an emergency brake with a cable? I always assumed this was a requirement. I supposed I could search for the answer.

The parking brake is electric, as is the same with most cars these days. I'm not sure how that works as a failsafe, but it is electric. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_parking_brake

And as Steve said, there is a parking pawl that is engaged when you put the car into Park. You can easily confirm this by stopping on a hill, engaging the parking brake, then putting the car into Park. If you then release the parking brake without holding you foot on the brake pedal, the car will likely lurch a bit as it comes up again the parking pawl. Try this on a 26% grade hill like where I live, and it will be exciting! ?

This is what happens when you push the Start/Stop button while driving:

If you push the button, nothing happens.

If you push the button down for more then 2 seconds, all electronics shut down and you loose forward power but you can still easily steer and brake. You will get a yellow warning message on the IPC that the power is off and to restart, turn the gear shift knob to neutral and push the Start/Stop button. The car will instantly start up and run like normal. Nothing dramatic happens at all.

I wonder if things stopped immediately for you because you were in reverse instead of drive.

MY guess is he was in reverse with the brake peddle slightly pushed also. Hence the fast stop. Brake and on /off and the car goes off.
Don't try that at speed.

I’ve always wondered - what would happen if you turned the shift dial from D to N, R, or P, while driving at highway speeds?

Nothing happens at all when you select any gear while driving over 5 mph (except it goes into neutral). However you will get a message on the IPC “Gear selected will engage at low speed”

The emergency brake is electronic, not a cable. You should know how to set it, in the center console. Lift on the "P" to set. Push to release. See manual for more info.

His car stopped immediately because he was going less than 5 mph, not because it was in reverse. As I mentioned in a post above, shifting into any other gear going over 5 mph whether the car is moving forward or in reverse, it will shift into neutral and you will get a message on the IPC “Gear selected will engage at low speed”
