Despite multiple conversations with Ford customer service and 2 servicing investigations no one at ford has ever seen the Apple Maps GPS problem . Has anyone found a way to get this to stop happening

Mine was behaving decently, until i went to show it off to a buddy that's suffering the same thing. Then mine went a half block down the road and was doing doughnuts I guess as the mapp flipped and floped everywhere. From what I can tell the RFA update I did helped some. But otherwise it's a 14/15 Pro issue that only messes with a bunch of us, and not all of us, so Ford knows nothing about it.

From my understanding from it freaking out, the phone should be using the cars GPS when in Car Play, but it's not. Either because it's negotiation to it isn't working well, or isn't working at all. I think it's over bluetooth to the cars GPS. Mine went to crap when i upgraded from a 12pro to a 15 pro, it was down hill until I FDRS'd the crap out of my car and now it's 'pretty good' 'most of the time'.

Where do you keep your phone while this happens? Is it plugged in or wireless?

I’ve had this problem sometimes and it seems worse when the phone is in the storage area under the big screen. Apple Maps seems less likely to lose GPS than Google Maps. GPS signal seems to be better if I plug it in and place the phone on the flat surface next to the gear shifter.

I have the same issue. Solution is take the phone out of my back right pants pocket and put it in the storage area below the center screen. As soon as I do that, it gets the proper GPS lock and shows me going in the right direction on the correct road.

Oddly this doesn't work for me. However I'm using an apple magsafe puck on an aluminum 45 degree stand. I don't think it's the aluminum but I always forget to grab the phone and just move it over to the 'old' wireless charger or attempted to slap it over the parking brake button.

I'm generally putting it in the wireless charging area, but obviously not wirelessly charging (my case doesn't allow it, and there's stuff in the way), or in one of the two cupholders. iPhone 13 if that helps. The issue and solution is reliably reproducible.

I didn’t realize this was an app-specific problem. I have experimented with all three - Apple, Google, and Waze.

I think Apple looks the nicest. The buildings have nice little 3D relief, and the map is both more detailed - depicting center medians for example - and also more clean by only showing major street names until you really zoom in.

Waze and Google clutter the map with too many street names when zoomed out. Google is also a very flat look, whereas Waze looks a bit cartoony.

I do appreciate all the user-data provided by Waze. But overall, I think I like Apple best.

Thoughts?

Interesting, I had this issue prior to my iPhone 15 Pro. I had a 12 Pro previously and had the same issue. the strange this is this does not happen in my wife's Buick. Works flawlessly in her car

I haven't run into that, but when using any maps on a trip I put the phone on a spigen magsafe charger that fits perfectly with the touchscreen. I suspect a lot of it is down to the design of the vehicle and maybe some of the roof glass coating as I don't have issues in my F-150 either, even if I leave the phone in my pocket.

So , first some background . I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max but this also happens with my wifes iphone 14. Apple maps works perfectly when the phones are not connected via Bluetooth or wired . So that rules out phone positioning in the vehicle. When connected via sync the phone is meant to use the gps from the car so either this isn’t working correctly OR the car GPS is broken . i can’t be the car GPS as the built in navigation works perfectly. the frustrating thing is ford doesn’t say the problem even exists in their database even though I’ve seen other posts here that detail https://www.macheforum.com/site/threads/gps-on-wireless-carplay-better-since-ios-17-4.34679/

Apple CarPlay maps and GPS do not use the Ford built in GPS. It uses the iPhone.
If phone in pocket or purse then not so good GPS. Sometimes in charging mat not so good.

so please explain when the phone is in the vehicle and NOT connected to the car Apple Maps works correctly whereas when connected it doesn’t . As I said this is about incorrect GPS data being passed to the phone from the car .

Does the built in nav show the right location? If so, your car is not the problem. If not, go to the dealer and don’t mention your phone, ask them to fix built in nav.

The phone’s Bluetooth, WiFi (CarPlay uses both) interferes with its own GPS. This can be due to radio frequency, power budget, or thermal management. Wireless charging can also substantially mess with thermal.
