Avoid windshield recall as long as you can. (Until dealer has all backup parts)

Did they end up giving a loaner for the meantime? I am afraid we are on the same wait time..
I did not need a loaner, since I have 4 vehicles for 2 drivers already. But the wait is still very irritating.

I am scheduled for the recall later this week. When I asked about having a spare windshield on hand they told me it wasn’t possible since they can only order one if the windshield breaks. I am in a good position right now since I’m just recently retired and with the crappy weather I can get away with just driving our other car as my wife rarely needs it. Hopefully it will go smoothly as they have already done a couple with no issues.
Like someone else mentioned - I could understand that under "normal" circumstances (not sure there will ever be a "normal" anytime soon), but with the consistent delays in getting any part in, there's no reason why dealerships couldn't order a replacement to keep on hand, just like any other generic part.

I currently have a second vehicle, but it's getting sold soon, and I really don't want to be in a situation where I rely on their loaner.

I have yet to do this recall but honestly, a breaking windshield isn't that much of a worry that is keeping me from getting it done.

It's the the potential for unrepairable damage, like if there is some wind noise that wasn't present before, or if they nick some part of the trim - something that they might deny they did or is too minor for them to fully fix or is something that is impossible to really measure/diagnose (like a new wind noise issue).

It seems the remedy for potentially having to wait for a new windshield to come in in the event it breaks is to put your foot down and insist you get a loaner or rental before giving up the keys to your car.

For the windshield reseal only it doesn't look like the Ford dealer actually has physical work to do if they bring-in or set-up a customer with a glass person...is that right?
Correct. My dealer brought in an auto class repair shop from out of town.
They didn't have a spare windshield in case mine broke and I wouldn't expect them to so I'm glad it worked out.

I’m sure there are reasons that make a lot more sense to the parts manager than they do to us. Things such as storage space, having $ tied up in inventory that normally doesn’t move very well. I’d bet almost all non-warranty glass replacement is done by glass shops using non-OEM glass. It probably also relatively expensive for them to ship back if they end up not needing it.

But I agree, it would enable better customer service if they’d have a backup on hand.

I never said to NOT have the recall done because I think for safety reasons you should have it done. I would say to delay until dealerships knew what they were doing for the recall. Of course safety is first, but this recall couldn't have been that serious if they are sending notifications for it 1 month later to "receiving a letter in the mail" to actually perform the recall..

- posts by individuals are 'opinions'
- posters are not forcing readers to to do or not do anything
- posters are not providing services, withholding services, or liable for ANY reader decisions to do or not do anything as far as I can see.

Are you asking Moderators to accept responsibility and start censoring?

in this particular case, my personal opinion is that I'll probably choose to wait until I go in for some other reason, and only after I verify they have a spare windshield available. Compared to the risk of a windshield popping out during a rollover crash, I think the 'extra' risk from the windshield popping out is minor; but, that's MY opinion.

If the winshields were popping out randomly at highway speed, I'd have a different sense of urgency...

No.

Dealership has to check that front camera works.

I took my car in the beginning of February for the Windshield recall as well as the update. Things went smoothly, the loaner went smoothly. 1-4 days was my turnaround time.. Not a big deal, that was fine with me. Until it wasn't! The windshield shattered apparently and I am on a 2-3 week delay for another one because the dealer didn't have one in stock. (Which is silly to do this recall without having a backup plan).

I don't want to get on here to complain because I do still have a loaner, I just would recommend putting this off for a while because it isn't that big of a deal.. If you're anything like me. I am either charging for FREE at work or charging for half the cost at home. Putting gas in this car every week is having me spend more to not have my car than the other way around, which rubs me the wrong way.

Still I am thankful that I do have a loaner because I have heard horror stories of dealers not providing loaners for this recall. However I wish I would've waited until I knew they have done other cars or waited down the road when it was a bit warmer. The dealerships do not know what's going on.
Good afternoon, Moe! Could you please send us a private message with your VIN and dealership information? I would like to look into this windshield concern for you on my end. Thanks!

Hi,

I hope you don't mind if I ask a quick question from those in the UK waiting for their windscreen replacement ?

Are the replacement windscreens like-for-like - specifically with acoustic glass ?

I have asked Ford UK and they eventually confirmed that it was a Ford OEM windscreen - but have not been able to confirm whether they will be acoustic as per the original.

We understand the 2022 models are not having acoustic glass fitted, so this is a concern for those of us with 2021 builds.

Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated ?

Many thanks
David

I have no plan on having this done unless I have issues. Our windshield and pano are perfectly aligned and no wind noise. If it ain't broke don't mess with it.

You have no idea if the windshield is properly attached or not. If it isn't and fails in an accident, that would be tragic.

The acoustic glass removed from 2022 built cars were the two front side windows for driver and passenger. The windshield and panoramic remain the same. You should be able to put your mind at ease about the warranty work and replacement parts.

Is the case when windshield shatters that the seal is intact and so an over-reaction compared to those that had rock chips replace a window that was quote "real loose" .
