The FMC doesn't really have problems at L1 charging rates (120V~). Its issue on hot days is when using L2 charge rates (240V~) and there are high ambient temperatures. ??

since Feb 2022, I have 34k miles on my MME + 30k miles on wife's BMW 330e worth of charging L2 (32amps) on my FMC.... no issues.

It is inside garage.... 60 deg F winter up to maybe 90F ambient in summer.

I have never had a problem ....

What’s your definition of “fine?”

Mine is- You can use it daily for years and it charges every night.

Other than charge your car, what you expect a charger to do to be labeled “fine?”
Good, you've been lucky so far. The track record of it failing makes some of us think otherwise. This topic has been beaten to death. Please continue. Possibly you can convince the charger to keep working for everyone.

And the track record for other chargers failing convinces you of what?

It came free with the car, is covered under warranty, and works.

Just like my microwave, refrigerator, toaster oven and Tv……. I’ll use them until they break outside the warranty period.

Is your goal to convince mine to break? ?

It's $550 now, which in my book isn't free. I don't want yours to break, it'd be great if it worked for your term of ownership. I won't trust mine as far as I can throw it. Which with that cord isn't far.

Oh for sure if I was buying a Mach E now and had to pay $550 or go with a different charger (or if mine breaks), I will consider some aftermarket options.

To be clear, my review of it is still “it’s fine.” Read that as 3 stars, gets the job done. But there are better chargers out there for sure.

Yeah I used mine for eighteen months without issue, but it came with the car. I finally bought a juicebox 40 thru my local utility ($250 discount). When I ordered my 23 GT I opted not to get the portable charger, would be no situation I could envision where I'd need it.

My mobile charger lasted three years of garage-mounted NEMA 14-50 use but now has a permanent amber light fault, so I ordered a plug-in ChargePoint® Home Flex NEMA 14-50. Does anyone have any tips for the installation?

my mobile is 40mo old, and charges both my MME and wifes BMW every day.... total of almost 80k miles charged so far.

If you got any EVSE with 14-50p and your 14-50 receptacle is wired correctly with 6awg conductors and 50a circuit breaker, you should be good to go.

I'd recommend checking to make sure the new charger is set to put out 32a, and NOT use the 40a or 50a settings which are intended only for hardwired installations, typically with bigger wire and a 60amp breaker.

32a *should be* fast enough to get a full charge overnight, and will keep the heat down lower risk and longer life.

I know, I konw, I know... then why do they give you a mount with it? I don't know, but I think the verdict is in. Look at this:

And that's just a few.

My Grizzl-e showed up in the mail today. It's not even close. As soon as I unwrapped it and pulled it out of the box, I could tell the difference. The Ford Mobile Charger is not made for everyday use. Now, I know a Grizzl-e can handle "extreme conditions" so maybe they designed it a bit overkill, but seriously look at the size difference of the cables.

I think the verdict is in, the mobile charger is for the trunk, not the garage wall. Spread the word.

Mine is my daily charger and mine failed after 3 years. The replaced it under Ford Extended Service plan.

40A EVSE doesn't require a hardwired installation. A properly installed and spec'd 50A receptacle will be fine. That said, I don't disagree that a hardwired installation is probably a better idea if you can do it, but it absolutely is not required for the 40A setting.

you might be ok at 40amps for an hour or two, but the plug/outlet will run hotter than at 32 amps for sure.

The 120% Rule and residential code is designed for 1.5 hours of continuous use. When you go over that, you really should derate further to prevent heat building up, especially in an area like a garage that could hit summertime High ambient Temps close to 100 f

If the op wants worry free use for a 10 hour overnight charge I would definitely recommend limiting to 32 amps.

The rule is 3 hours or more of continuous use, not 1.5. And what the rule actually says is that the wiring and breaker need to be upsized by 125% for continuous use, not 120%. A 40A load on a 50A breaker and receptacle with the correct sized wiring is totally adhering to those rules. Btw, this rule equally applies to a hard-wired connection. The plug and outlet won't necessarily run hotter than a 32A EVSE if the blades used for the EVSE and the receptacle are appropriately sized. I know that the Hubbell and Bryant 50A receptacles are a lot beefier than the cheaper ones available at home improvement stores.

get the hard wire connection pigtail for it and use that method of connection. My CP works just fine hard wired on a 60 amp circuit w/ CP set at 48A (80% continuous duty rating per code).

Just curious, anyone know Ford’s position on using their mobile charger on a regular/daily basis? Mine is mounted inside my garage and I’ve been using it for a year now.
