Listen, at the core they are not wrong. The dealership model is an impediment to Ford in rolling out online ordering. The gatekeepers remain. However, with a little bit of homework, it is possible to find a dealer with no ADM during online ordering and even on some on the lot vehicles.

While I think there are examples of this, I think there are plenty of examples of dealerships not adding ADM.

My dealership (Sil Terhar, Broomfield CO) has been nothing but exceptional throughout the entire process. No markup, proactively discussed financing including Options, regular status updates and quick follow up when I call.

The biggest problems seem to be coming from either uninformed small town dealers who will be fine after 1-2 sales and where there isn’t a Tesla showroom nearby anyway or big town dealers where you have alternative Ford dealerships nearby.

How it probably went down:

Someone tried to buy a car, but it had an ADM.

Dealer wouldn’t budge.

Customer said, “Fine, I’ll go buy a Tesla.”

Dealer said, “go for it.”

Consider the source. Clean Technica is citing an article in Teslarati (far from an unbiased source) who cites a Reddit Post in a Tesla Subreddit, but shows no evidence. Now the original post has been deleted by the OP. I'm not sure this ever really happened.

Ford’s ordering web site could be a little more plain in indicating ADM. It currently is listed as “Difference from MSRP” where it probably just be called ”Dealer Markup.” ?‍?

Yeah that article is extremely frustrating to read. He said the customer reached out to a Ford Executive. How? While some Ford Exec emails aren't hard to find, like you can email Farley even fairly easily, generally it is an assistant that answers, very rarely does a CEO of a multinational company have time to go through the thousands of emails from the public they likely get. Usually the published emails you can easily find are that way to act as a honey pot and another rep answers them.

If they just contacted Ford Support, then they probably eventually said it would be easier to get the Tesla in that case since Ford has zero control over dealer ADM on this issue, so their hands are tied.

Lastly, the article doesn't provide the actual email exchange, could have even blocked out the names. And they take this supposed executive's word and then say at the end "when even Ford executives", plural, are saying it. So you get one maybe, probably not, executive to say something but now it's the general view of multiple Ford execs?

Look, I don't want to have the dealer model either. But to say Tesla doesn't have in essence ADM is nonsense. They have increased the price on the Model Y two or three times already this year, most recently pushing it above the $60k mark for the cheapest one. Even with ADM you could probably get into a Mach E Select for less, and that's without the federal tax credit that Tesla doesn't get either (although I think they should).

Bad article written for people that already agree with them.

I think the OP should change the title to 3, not Y. Apples to oranges. Furthermore, if it WAS a Y.. good luck. Estim delivery right now is June 2022, so it's either wait... or wait. The wait IS apples to apples.

In more normal times, that difference could be a negative value on plentiful cars. Calling it a markup wouldn’t make sense in that context.
