Ah yes, the magic charging tray. That is what I do also. I hold the phone in the same hand I use to press the door button, and then drop it on the magic charging tray prior to starting the car. It seems to be pretty reliable when I do that.
Out of curiosity why would putting the phone on the charging tray help?

I put an Apple MagSafe charger on the charging tray. Works much better with the i phone compared to fords charging pad.

There have been multiple debates and theories about why it seems to make PaaK work better.

My theory is when the phone is on the magic charging tray, the Bluetooth connection is more reliable than other locations in the car, maybe due to the placement of the sensors in the car. I just do it out of habit, as I like to have my phone out of my pocket anyway.

placing phone on charging tray works way better than back pocket. ;)

However, after about a year of great luck with PAAK, it started failing a couple days ago for me. I initiall thought it was FP 4.20.0.... but turned out to be a frigging update of my PHONE operating system that screwed up the phone-car BT connection.

Long story short, I fixed it this morning by:
- uninstalling FP from phone
- deleting existing pairings on phone to MME and PAAK
- resetting PAAK in MME
- deleting phone from MME
.... and re-installing and setting up PAAK like it was a new car

Took me hours to figure out it was the frigging phone update that killed it, but it works fine now.

Was it iOS 16?

once you are in the car, the PAAK signal sensitivity is lowered to the point that proximity to the center display is important. center tray, or right next to the display on a phone holder work ok.

left pocket, or back pocket, not so good.
