No signal means your app won't work. I often travel where that happens.
Not if it supports NFC. With ChargePoint, I can tap my phone or watch on the charger and it works just fine, even without cell service. I have a card too, but I’ve never used it.

I've used an RFID card when cell service was not available. I keep them now because I already have them and they don't cost anything. No signal means your app won't work. I often travel where that happens.
Great point....what to do when you don't have a cell signal. Hmmm.

Fun observation. And, in fact, once those gas stations got closer together ICE cars started to go mainstream (or was it once ICE cars went mainstream gas stations got closer together? Probably chicken and egg at the same time).
Gas stations were probably a minor factor. Easy starting, reliability, and roads were probably more important. But you're right, the infrastructure and the vehicles evolve together.

Important to realize that since BEVs are using the existing infrastructure upgrading the infrastructure is a minor issue. The only missing pieces are higher charging rates on the vehicle side and more higher charging on the station side. And where I am the problem is more with the former than the latter. In this regard, given the EA charging network, the Taycan is, and the upcoming Rivians and Cadillac Lyriq (assuming it supports 800V charging) will be, suitable for longer trips.

Typically DCFC's (even networked Level-2's as well) have an 800# on them so a secondary way is always: call them. Some will take your CC info over the phone and remotely activate it. If they don't have a number, use your phone's browser and search for the company..

No app, no card needed.

(There are many EV reviews with the reviewer that usually only reviews ICE's where they describe this very process.)

There is always a way.
I was at an EA station with a person who could not get their credit card to read. Called EA, had them reset it and still couldn't get it to work. After a short conversation with him, I tapped my phone and it started instantly.

While there is always a way, it isn't necessarily a good way. Fumbling around for 10 minutes just to start a 40 minute charge session is very frustrating and a great way to scare people off of BEVs.

This gets to the other issues with charging companies. When you say card do you mean a charging RFID card or a credit card?
I did mean credit card. The reliability of credit card readers on EVSEs seems remarkably low to me. I'm sure it's gotten better, but I've been burned a few too many times to not have an app or RFID.

Although I stopped carrying RFID cards and just use my phone now and that has worked great so far.

You know, if there were forums back in...oh 1910s, 1920s....

"They better get these gas stations figured out if they expect people to start driving cars over horses!" and "They aren't close enough together. How am I supposed to go to my aunt's house 300 miles away when there isn't a gas station 1/2 way between us???"
Except driving a car instead of riding a horse has a ton of other functional advantages that make it worthwhile.

Driving a BEV vs an ICE doesn't. In fact it's actually less convenient to drive a BEV a long distance relative to ICE, not more convenient.

I bet you they wouldn't have thought so back then: Saddlebags, stage coaches, etc.

(Arguing about a joke ! Love it ;) )

For my lifestyle a BEV is more convenient than an ICE. I drive to work everyday and never go to the gas station. My days are very packed Mon-Fri. On a road trip I have extra time to kill. The pace is different, chill.

Horses had real FSD as long as you didn’t mind the horse navigation system. Proof horses are better than a Tesla.

How much grain would you have to put in a feed bag to go 1000 miles on a horse? (Assuming the route was all asphalt and the horse had no grass to graze on)

Well, it was a joke not meant to be taken seriously. Oh, an all asphalt journey? Not possible. literally. Same as taking the journey in any BEV if no chargers were available.

But since you asked ...

None. Horses don’t need grain. Nor do they thrive on it. You only give them grain if you want to provide extra energy for them or need to bulk them up a bit. How long would the same journey take in a Tesla if you could only charge on L1 AC because ... reasons. That makes about as much sense.

Plus, I bet your BEV doesn’t nuzzle you either nor does it have a cool name like Copper Jacket. Horses rear ends don’t fall off either, but they do pick up mud. ;)

Hmm "Copper Jacket" sounds like a great name for a Mach-E!

Glad to hear it was only a joke rather than the faulty point we've often heard raised before. ?

Best anti-theft device ever. A thief sees this and they would be super foolish to steal it.

I'll be replacing my current best anti-theft device of a manual transmission (at least in the US).

Copper was a gorgeous golden buckskin gelding. No colors even close to his coat. Well there’s black like his stockings but that’s it. :)
