I keep having to ask for help, this is driving me nuts.

Got my new MME yesterday. I had the foresight to order a second fob, got it in, no problems. Even got the salesman to get me a quote to get the second fob programmed.

And then the confusion...

I have not spoken to the Parts/Service people directly yet, yet!

So, while we were doing the paperwork I gave the new fob to the salesman, he ran it back to the back and came back 30 seconds later with "they dont know how to do it". I said something to the tune of "Pretend a customer lost one of their fobs, and need a new one. Here is the replacement fob". He was back there for 4-5 minutes this time, when he came back out I heard the guy say "Just have him bring it back tomorrow and ill spend a few hours figuring it out"

Today doesnt work for me, too many meetings but I said I would bring it up there Friday. But I am a little concerned about the few hours bit, dont they have some kind of programmer or ODB2 interface they can just plug in and read the key? Im also a little concerned that they didnt understand the difference between the key and the blade, since there is no blade on the MME.

Anyone able to give me clear directions to give them that I can print out?

Would I be better served by trying other dealers, or a locksmith, Im in central KY, and this is the first MME they sold in my city, their demo was sold to someone in ohio, so there may not be many out there and its a learning experience all around, I can respect that. However, I would think a ford is a ford is a ford when it comes to key fobs?

I believe they have to connect to their IDS system and program the key to the vehicle, just like with any other fob.

My dealer ordered a 2nd fob, free. When it came in, he disappeared for 10 or 15 minutes and then it was done.

419-01B Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS)
  1. Using a diagnostic scan tool, establish a session with the vehicle.
Refer to: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
  1. [Skip if other fob present]
  1. Using a diagnostic scan tool, select TOOLBOX>PCM or SOBDMC (if equipped) or BCM (some vehicles) under HS-CAN1 module list> PATS Programming or ABS (if equipped) under HS-CAN2 or FD-CAN(on some models) module list> PATS Programming.
  1. Select the appropriate procedure and follow the on-screen instructions.
  1. When the “Gaining Security Access” screen appears, ensure the diagnostic scan tool is connected to the Internet and select "Yes" to continue. If directed to this step from the above alarm activation steps for vehicles without a keyless entry keypad, select “Erase Keys.”
  1. NOTE: If programming a passive key (vehicles with push-button start), refer to the Owner's Literature for the passive key backup starting location. The passive key must be placed in this location to successfully program

Return to the diagnostic scan tool window and follow the on-screen instructions. The door locks and hazard flashers cycle to indicate when a key is successfully programmed. After programming the first key and selecting OK, place the second key in the backup starting location and select “Program Key” to program the second key. Start the vehicle; if it will not start, select PATS Functions and perform a parameter reset or module initialization for the BCM, the PCM, SOBDMC (if equipped), or the ABS module (if equipped) as necessary. If the vehicle will still not start, perform the procedure again starting at step 1

They do it the same way they do on any other modern Ford vehicle. There's nothing special about the MME in that regard. If they're going to charge you for the programming, you may want to go to another dealer that won't take hours.

Agreed. I brought my second fob to my dealer. They told me it can take 30 to 45 min to program and test with the car. I gave them the second one that I bought online. They programmed it with no issues. I agree it's just like any other modern fobs. SMH

Correct, the shop time to program the fobs is 0.2 hours or 12 minutes which is all they should charge you for. Not hours.

Sorry the number steps got messed up (this forum does that), you can figure it out.

It definitely did not take hours to program the second fob; there was confusion about what to do with the key blade to complete the fob however...

@generaltso This dealer hadn't dealt with it I guess. The parts guys were also a little confused by that fact when I was trying to source my fob in the first place... thankfully they had the parts and were able to program it with a minimum of fuss. I should also mention I did not purchase my second fob or have it programmed at the dealer where Scotty was purchased.

My experience is that most dealers have a one-hour minimum.

It can pay to call around. I got four quotes for programming: $130, $145, $145, and $190. Went with the cheapest and they knocked $10 off of that because they didn't need to cut the key blade. Not sure how many dealers are near you, though.

Surprisingly more than you would think.

I went with the one here in town for obvious reasons, but theres one on the outskirts of the next town over.
