Getting back to the slow charging on L2...

This thread discusses the OTA software patch that limits charge based on charge port temperature...
https://www.macheforum.com/site/thr...rge-port-dtc-p0e5f-stored-in-the-sobdm.29967/
... to diminish the amount of charge port replacements Ford would have to do.

I remember seeing a post on another thread here from someone who aimed a room fan at his charge port so he could charge at 8kw as opposed to 6kw, and chuckling at his photo.

I laughed too soon.

Last night, I plugged in late on my 40A charger and saw that at 8kw, I'd be ready to roll at 6:45am according to Ford Pass. About 1/2hr later, I checked again and saw my rate down to 6kw and a ready time of 9:15ish.
I had to be at work an hour before that.
I don't have a room fan, so here's my ridiculous photo of the workaround -- blue ice wrapped around the charger hosel, to diminish temperature as much as possible to allow 8kw flow for maximum charge on a time-critical departure.

You should try cleaning your charge port, that can also help:

How to Clean Your Charge Port

FYI your J1772 looks like it's in bad shape, that could be the source of your overheating problems.

Thanks for the tip!
But the charge port is pretty squeaky clean (it was already replaced earlier this year) and the only thing wrong with the J1772 (which was also replaced last year) is the hose covering comes off --a cosmetic issue that I tried to remediate, which is why it LOOKS rough. It actually charges a Chevy Bolt at its full speed with no problem. Only the Mustang charges slow (without... added external... cooling)

People using kW and kWh interchangeably drives me nuts too.
But you have to admit kWh is a strange unit. I get why it exists but from a physics perspective it’s kind of odd given that a Watt is a Joule/s, making a kWh a unit of energy (3.6kJ).

Yes, I wish a kWh had a different name so people wouldn’t get so confused. They should just call it an electric gallon.

I did clean mine today. They were pretty black. If I rubbed the q-tip in and out it cleaned a lot better than trying to spin it around. I noticed all of my pins are slightly bent. Using the q-tip as a gauge the AC pins are bent down (the gap on the bottom much tighter than the top or sides) and the DC pins are bent towards each other.

I'm going to 100% tonight in order to head to Flag around noon. Home Assitant is monitoring the charger now so I'll have size by side graphs. Though it's about 10 degrees cooler today than yesterday thanks to the wind. I'm also going to need to DCFC up north to make it home as I'm L1 up in the forest. Yee haa Giddy up.

Ford Mustang Mach-E Home Level 2 charging slower than expected Screenshot 2023-09-01 at 7.43.44 AM

Yellow: before cleaning (32k and 2.5ish years of use) charging from 60 to 85%
Purple: After cleaning charing from 68 to 100%
It's better as it derates for a shorter time, but it's still happing. Only dropped the handle temp 2 degrees.
(This is only 1/2 of the current as I. can't seem to get Home Assitant tocombine both legs of the power into one graph due to the data source and me not wanting to bother with it yet. So 'double' this is about 38 amps seen in the car.)

Mine averages above 6KW into the car so yours is really slow at 14 to 8 amp if I am reading the graph correctly? How long does it take you to go from 20 to 80% now? Cleaning it looks like it fixed it right up and the two graphs are like night and day ;).

My handle since the beginning is always warm to the touch when charging. Worked great and it being warm was no problem for 2+ years but now after an update it seems to be a concern? Strange but true. ?‍♂

It still came real close to 149 degrees. That spike to 250+ happens when I plug in my FFE for some reason. The FFE needed some to get to the gym and back at 5pm in these graphs.

My graph is amp energy 18amp, per side so 38 Amps at the EVSE about 9kW

Yeah, that's sort of what I've been seeing. Cleaning the pins does help some, but it still ends up derating, just less. Either way, since your pins are bent you probably need a new charge port. Not sure if they were physically bent from a crooked plug insertion or if they somehow melted in the back and are now out of position.
