How can the GOM be this bad? Any tips for consumer steps to improve?

This weekend drove to the airport and back as well as some errands then plugged in last evening. Ford Pass is telling me that it added 89 miles with 32 kWh. Sounds reasonable, except I actually drove 132 miles, not 89. While I can understand that this is a prediction, it's a really bad one. It's less accurate than the budgets that Congress puts together!

Now that the weather is warmer, the range fairy sprinkled some additional range on Man o' War, which makes me happy. What doesn't make me happy is that with the GOM this far off, it's likely to be equally crappy at predicting where to stop and charge, the amount of charge needed, etc. Yes, use my phone with a better app, but still.

So, I'm soliciting your recommendations for what we, as owners, can do to improve the GOM? Please jump in. I'm willing to guinea pig anything and report back.

That has nothing to do with the GOM. That is 100% FordPass bad data. There is nothing you can do to fix it.

I filled up my wife's CR-V this morning. Since the last fill, it had been driven 228 miles. Its GOM showed 54 miles range remaining, or a total of 282 miles on the last tank. After I filled up, its GOM shows 364 miles to empty - it's telling me it will magically go an extra 80 miles on the next tankfull! . The car is always driven in a consistent fashion - short trips transporting grandkids and trips to the store.

When I fill up my F150 (God, I need my Lightning!). the GOM initially shows over 100 miles more than I will end up getting.

GOMs suck. Always have, always will.

I suspect the extra mileage is due to your significantly lighter wallet!

Discussing the GOM , temperature and driving habits is now verboten to me. It’s like when a woman asks you “does this dress make me look fat”. You pretend you didn’t hear the question and you stumble into another room and look for a cocktail

Jes sayin. None of it makes much sense …not much to talk about until it does. That will not occur until the GOM ??‍♀ fairy is replaced by a GOM ?‍♀ genie. Hopefully one with a background in electric flying carpet

We’ve covered this

While I have not yet taken delivery of my MME, I have had the same issue with my 2018 Tesla PM3. I have found two solutions:

1) I have a third-party app called Stats for Tesla that gives me both my "rated range" and a more accurate "estimated range". I am hoping a similar iPhone app will be developed for the MME. I find that having an accurate estimate of range is only necessary when I go on longer trips.

2) For day to day driving, I pay attention to the battery percentage exclusively and don't even take into consideration my actual mileage rating. After paying attention to the percentage for a few days, you quickly develop a sense of your energy usage and when you need to charge. Since the GOM is often inaccurate, I suggest you simply ignore the indicated miles remaining and simply focus on the battery percentage remaining.

For example, when you use your iPhone, you don't calculate how many minutes of talk time you have available. You just occasionally glance at the battery and plug it in when it needs more juice.

If you look at your Trip data in the car, and make use of your Trip 1, Trip 2 resets for different types of driving, you'll get a much better idea what your average consumption is under different conditions, speeds, and temperatures.... The GOM is pretty far off sometimes as it carries a lot of history that might not reflect your current trip.

you might want to 'reset' history, and Trips.... and get a feel for your average around town consumption, which will likely be right around 3.25 miles/kWhr.... and highway will be 'less' if flat, 'significantly less', maybe 2.5 miles/kwhr if going mostly uphill, or temps <50 deg. and maybe up around 4 miles/kWhr if going mostly downhill and temps are >50F

ignore the GOM, and look for a charge when battery hits 50%....
trip planning, make the safe stops every 100-150 miles and then you don't have to worry about it.

This has been discussed numerous times and no consensus has ever emerged except that not to take the numbers at face value.

I personally have little to complain about. Maybe it's just because our driving patterns with a mix of freeway and local roads are similar from day to day, from 60 to just under 200 miles a day, averaging 100 miles a day. The number of actual miles driven has been +/-10% of the range deducted on GOM, unless there has been a wild temperature swing between days or when it became mostly at highway speed due to a road trip.

Last winter we were on a road trip with 70 miles left to the hotel. GOM showed ~90 miles left, it was almost 11PM and everyone was tired; but I knew there was no way we could make it without adding a charging stop, knowing that those last 70 miles also involved a 1,600-ft increase in elevation, temperature was at 0F and dropping (when we left home it was a warm 38F, similar to earlier days, so any estimates based on previous driving history would be overtly optimistic). I am glad we made the stop, the only DC charger along the 70 miles between that last EA location and our destination was a 50kW EVGo and it was broken.

With that in mind, I understand that it is a concern when it comes to planning charging stops. It makes no difference in our day-to-day driving.

Again, what OP is complaining about has nothing to do with the GOM... o_O

Do you drive to the airport and back often? If not, then that trip doesn't reflect your average driving pattern and therefore will affect the accuracy of the range prediction. The best way to improve the range prediction is to drive frequently and consistently. If your driving patterns vary greatly from trip to trip then you have very little hope of getting that thing to predict accurately.

In repeatable daily driving I find it excellent.

I have a question about Ford Pass itself. When I look at my journeys they are way off.
I drove 4.3 miles according to google maps and 12.8 on Ford Pass for that portion of my trip today. Why the diffence??
Any ideas. Love the car, but it is FAST..... I am afraid the Grabber Blue will cost me some tickets, would like a beep when I go over speed limit!!

Living in CO, we have wild altitude and temperature swings. Even in an ICE car I had to use my range indicator as an GOM when in the mountains. The temp variations now are just an added brain tease.

I assume you are referring to entries under My EV Driving Data - the car doesn't always reset the distance travelled in This Trip to zero on "ignition" start. It's a known bug.
