Old thread, but thanks to the OP for the guide. Worked well with my Uniden R3.
I also had a hard time with the cover using my fingers, but found using a carpet tuck tool made it easy (nice blunt edge). I can tell the difference between having the detector in the designed clear area versus any other part of the windshield. It even works (to some degree) sitting in the console, but not as well. Like everyone else has noted, it's a bit tight to mount it in the black-dotted area and the detector is at a slight angle with the top buttons inaccessible. I was going to try and mounting it upside down so that the buttons are visible and even made (from scrap aluminum sheet metal) a mount for it, including painting it and polyurethane. The mount needed to be about 3.5" long to reach the windshield in this position as the mounting slot is further from the windshield. But, I am mounting it right of the rearview mirror since I have my toll tag on the left. The mirror tap was not long enough to reach the connector if I mounted it upside down as the power connector then is at the far side. So, I am just leaving it right-side up for now and will see how things work. I could always swap positions with the toll tag and then in the upside down position, the connector would be closer to the mirror. If I do this, I will update my post and show a pic. It's great not having a hanging cord!
