My charger security lock doesn't work

When I plug my charger in the security lock does not lock it. Basically it clicks, but when you come back to the car without t he key and the fordpass phone the whole car is locked and can not be open but you can easily plug out the charger.

So this button is useless

and this button on the touchscreen is always disabled

can somebody explain me how is it supposed to work and why it is not working on my car.

That button only works with DC charging.

It only works as a safety for DC fast charging. With the high amperage's that are used to fast charge if there was no signal to cut the current before pulling the connector it would cause a large arc like a welder. So this sends a signal to stop the charge before letting you unlock the connector from the car.

I thought pressing on the charger handle button stops the charge.

Correct. Unless you’re using a plug that has a hole for a padlock.

Not here in the States. It does lock in Europe.

Wonder how many failed and couldn't be unplugged, or failed and couldn't be plugged in. I've seen a lot of j1772 plugs, but none of which had a hole for a pin to lock it in place.

But take a drill to yours.

Though a 5 year old could probably break that lock. Or the handle

I question whether I would want it to lock to the car. If someone wants to steal the EVSE, they're likely to try yanking it out forcefully, and now it's a bill for repairing the chargeport and a new EVSE.

That's my thinking anyway.

In this case just don't lock it.



but I think people who want to steal the charger - they want the charger, not the trouble. So if they can't take it out - they just leave it alone

No matter the mode of charging, it is not a security lock at all, at least in the US.
