Not all are really really special like some. ;) We are still waiting for that frunk button but good to know that this will be shortly behind it.

Not sure about both the Tesla magic docks and an adapter as that sounds a bit redundant? Will tesla let you charge a non-tesla at non-magic dock super chargers with an adapter? ?‍♂ If so why the magic docks at all? Just open them all and you need an adapter. If Tesla only allows charging at the magic docks (musked up) than the adapter is a bit useless since you use theirs. Not sure I see the logic in both to date.
Tesla and Ford have said we will be able to chargers with an adapter at any v3 Supercharger. There are thousands of those. There are about 12 Magic Dock stations. There’sa substantial difference in scale there.

So why magic docks?
The Magic Docks started rolling out before the Ford announcement. Even though you have to suspect Ford was in talks for weeks or months before the announcement, I suspect Tesla has been working on Magic Dock for a year or so, and already had the updates on the schedule, so went ahead anyway.

Also, while Ford, GM, and a lot of other big names are signed up for NACS, not everyone is. So Tesla would be smart to continue to add Magic Dock at key areas at least until a day comes where everyone is onboard, if it ever happens.

Because Tesla signed an agreement with the government to open at least 3,500 Superchargers and 4,000 destination chargers to non-Teslas by end of 2024 (and receive funding to do so). That's totally separate from the Ford/GM/XXX deals.

Of course no one knows if Tesla and the federal government are having discussions about how doing the other deals meets the requirements or not. I can't imagine that since these newer deals don't include every non-Tesla car company how they'd meet the requirements, or even come close, to the federal deal.

My husband wonders if the adapters provided will be these magic docks, with all version 3 superchargers updated to have magic docks. I think they likely will make and sell adapters, because that is more potential profit, but the magic docks qualify for federal incentives, so... We will see?

I forget if you’ve had the GFM and BCM updated via FDRS. If not, the frunk button won’t be coming to you any time soon since nobody knows when the OTA will be available. If you have, you only need to get your car to get an OTA so that it can communicate module revisions back to Ford’s servers. That would activate the FordPass app button. I know, just getting an OTA is sometimes a crap shoot. ??

The federal requirements are not met by adding a Magic Dock to a Tesla Supercharger. The requirements are extensive. Today, you must use the Tesla app to charge with a Magic Dock. That right there doesn't meet the requirements.

Yeah, I suspect the adapters themselves are already made (in terms of, designed and ready for mass production, maybe already in progress), because they shouldn't be that difficult. Tesla already has a NACS to CCS for their cars and it's been a solid adapter from what I have heard. I suspect a lot of the delay is in Ford developing the software updates for the existing MME/Lightning that will probably start coming as an OTA at the end of this year so the vehicles can communicate directly with the SuperCharger and handle plug and charge.

While there is a level of communication already possible as evidence by the magic dock, I suspect Ford, GM, and others, are pushing for the more seamless experience that drivers get from EA Plug and Charge (usually). We can go back and forth on if that's really the hold up, but the adapter shouldn't be that difficult overall so I have to imagine the reason for early 2024 is more around getting all the systems talking for a more seamless user experience. If they launched it as-is with just an adapter, would probably be a lot of confused owners wondering how they activate the Tesla chargers. Always have to remember not all MME owners come to this site or have our level of engagement. The last thing Ford wants is to add SuperChargers to the route planning and have owners show up with no idea what to do to activate the charger.

OK, the magic docks are a step closer to meeting federal requirements.

So by the sounds of things they have it all figured out and it is running like clockwork ?

The best for me by far is the tap and charge chargers. Pay at the pumps works for me with one debt card required. I could uninstall a whole bunch of apps if all would adopt that. Including a new Tesla one.

Said Farley, “...when they go use the Tesla Supercharger they’re still using Ford [software]. We were very concerned if they had to switch over to Tesla software, but that was part of the deal. It was a dealbreaker for us.”

I suspect the Magic Docks are a way to test the whole backend for charging non-Teslas in the US. Tesla had already implemented it in Europe where they are requited to install CCS2.

Based on one charging session, Tesla has implemented the backend quite well.

Farley had some interesting things to say to MotorTrend about how Ford came about getting a deal with Tesla. Check out the 19:43 mark.

Meanwhile Tesla has sprinkled in a few more MagicDocks.

Moab UT and Mackinaw City MI just opened.

One in the Dallas area and 2 in Ontario Canada opened a month or two ago too.

What have you heard? I know on his channel Kyle said his was melted/scorched after less than a year. He's a tesla stan of course, so he didn't make a big deal of it.
