Posted in the New England fourm as well but figured i would hit the masses! So very new, picking up the 2022 (5k) miles AWD premium w/ extended battery this week. I have a couple questions

1- I am getting a L2 charger 240 plug put in with 50 amp breaker and wonder if i should get the juice box 40 or the Charge point Flex. Both would receive rebates from Eversource(electric Company in CT).

2-Cold weather range? i know weather affects the range and pre condition is the way to go. But I have a 100 mile RT commute 2 days a week with no charging at work. (but would be in a parking garage ). I know if i charge at night it should be good but how much would the battery discharge sitting outside in say 32 degrees? Hypothetically if i pulled in with 100 mile range at 8am and left the office at 4, would it go down 30-40%?

3-What are the best Apps to Download for trip(charging points) etc.

Thanks in advance for the newbie question, I guess we were all new at one point!

I hear both chargers are good. I have the Wallbox Flex and love it. You will lose range I have extended range 2021 and lose about 100 miles in the cold winter I dont think you loose much if any range sitting in a garage during a workday. Use things like heated seat and heated steering wheel to help your range if getting low. Best apps are ABRP, Plugshare, Electrify America, the NAV in the car works great too. If you use Car play I think Apple added charging stops to.

Sitting outside for a few hours.. I’d be shocked if you saw any change but certainly at most 1%. You’ll be fine.

I do a 60 mile RT commute and I have the same spec MME. Could easily do a 100 mile commute with an 80% charge, with plenty of buffer. No need to full charge for that. I go to my in-laws all the time which is 95 miles round trip. Easy to do in all seasons with 80%.

1 - lots of opinions and threads on chargers (EVSEs); some of them are stickied. Stay away from the chinese junk on amazon, but either of those will be just fine. link here

2 - cold weather doesn't drain the battery, it just makes it less efficient - so you won't lose anything during the day. If you warm up the car for 15 minutes before leaving at night you might see a percent or 2 of loss but nothing more. The resistive heating element actually eats more power than the A/C, so overall you should generally expect a 30% to 40% range hit if it's really cold. If you have a heated steering wheel and seat heaters use those and put the cabin heat a little lower. You'll be just fine range-wise with the ER battery.

3 - plugshare and abetterrouteplanner (ABRP) are the 2 best options; I actually wrote a tutorial that's also a sticky on how to use ABRP. Link here

In general this has a list of good topics for newbies:

Sitting outside shouldn't hurt too much on the driving part, but chances are good that they'll want to remote start to warm up the cabin. That's one of the great features of the MME - remote starting from anywhere (not just in fob range, and not mattering if it's closed in a garage). Heating the cabin up while unplugged can cost 2-3%. Still not too bad though (maybe 6-7 miles worth).

Between the JuiceBox and ChargePoint, I’d go with the ChargePoint. I have a JuiceBox 40, but can’t recommend it because of the twisted, stiff cable.

Check out Tom Moloughney’s YouTube channel. He‘s done reviews of both units.

Different people like different apps. I'm not as fond of ABRP, in part because I don't like the "purist" method of targeting running the car down to 10% on each leg. I like to leave enough power in the battery to reach a backup charger just in case (which can be anywhere from 10% to 50%). Varies greatly by the route. So I do all my route/charging planning manually.

However I think pretty much everyone agrees that Plugshare is THE must-have app for researching the chargers on a route. Play with the filters so you understand those. For the Mach-E, you want to toggle off all plugs except for CCS/SAE, J-1772, NEMA 14-50, and possibly Tesla (if you have a Teslatap adapter that allows you to use Tesla destination chargers). Not to be confused with Tesla-fast (Superchargers) which we cannot use (yet). Wall (120V) can be turned on too if you really want but that's really a super-slow desperation move. I keep that turned off.

Plugshare remembers how you left the filters last set, so be careful to check to make sure how you left it if something doesn't show up on the map you were expecting. There may be times you want to narrow it down to just CCS/SAE for the fast chargers only.

When you see what chargers you might want to use in your area, that will help determine which charging network apps you might also need (Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint, etc). You can always register for any of them right before your first use, of course. No need to sign up for everything right away.

You should not loose much parking in a garage. And 100 miles is easily doable even in a standard range awd

The same energy will be used to warm up the cabin anyway while driving the car, so no reason not to make it more comfortable.

100 mile round trips will not be a problem.

Yes, but it also runs longer in total if starting it early, thus using more. But yeah as we've all said, not enough to worry about if going 100 miles in an ER. Should have plenty even starting nice and toasty.

I‘ve have the ChargePoint for over a year and zero problems. My range in Iowa cold is about 170-180 miles so your commute won’t be a problem in the ER model (loss of 100 miles). I’ve never noticed battery drain when sitting in the cold.

Enjoy your new pony!
