I am finding this thread interesting. I am looking at leaving the Mach E family, and the BEV family due to multiple poor experiences while traveling and charging. I am looking at a PHEV, as I would use no gas daily, and be able to travel anywhere without worrying about charging. This is the perfect solution for me. And, the car on the top of my list WAS the Volvo XC60 Recharge.

But, I did not realize that the brand was Chinese owned. Although it is hard to avoid 'made in China', a choice to avoid a Chinese owned manufacturer is relatively easy.

Now to find a good PHEV that fits my needs, because Ford does not have one.

My 2 cents -

Telephony equipment from Huwawei, ZTE, and couple of other Chinese companies is strongly suspected of facilitating active data collection where installed. Major US telcos have embargoed it and where already in use by smaller telcos, it is being replaced long before normal end of life.

Spying for the Chinese government and maybe grabbing my Twitter DMs is one thing, but my understanding is that that the equipment likely also has dormant malware/exploits, which could be activated during some future conflict. I think this is a pretty good reason to ban vulnerable technology, especially for critical public infrastructure (communications, energy, transportation, food industry).

It seems reasonable to think that cars manufactured in China *might* have some or all of the above, and it would suck more to have my car disabled on purpose by a foreign adversary rather than inadvertently by Ford.

In the absence of actual proof in the auto industry, I guess I would avoid purchasing this type of product, but everyone is certainly free to evaluate and come to their own conclusions.

looks cool though I think it's weird that it has a huge glass panoramic roof but no glass rear window.

For this to make sense in my mind, there needs to be a direct link between Volvo and the CCP.

Is there one? I know Huawei is beholden to the CCP...but is Geely?

The US govt has taken a stance on Huawei...if Volvo was using Huawei components that it deemed a concern, it seems logical in my mind that they wouldn't have any concern pointing this out. Have they?

And what came of Volvo buying out Geely's investment in the company? Seems that should bode well for concerns. https://www.caixinglobal.com/2021-0...-lifting-foreign-ownership-cap-101743869.html
I cannot answer your question but it is positive. However, CCP infestation could be significant already and this minor change might not mean anything.

Basically, the competition is good and there is no reason to support a CCP influenced company when in reality they are still playing catch up to the MME, which I have been driving for 1.5 years now.

Can't argue with that...I just don't personally see anything that leads me to believe volvo is being influenced by the CCP so I wouldn't hesitate owning one.

Where do people think our battery materials come from?

Better question, where does Ford build the Chinese Mach E?

By the same logic, Ford is a “CCP influenced company.”

We may hate their politics, but we can’t seem to stay away from their cheap labor. Everyone loves the “idea” of Made in the USA, until they vote with their wallets.

And if you think you aren’t guilty of this, go check your Amazon order history. There’s a reason why half the crap you bought was “such a good deal.”

You lost me at CarPlay. Or lack there of. And that back window. 'Cocoon'. My kid would equate that to 'the time out room'.

The MME is the best-looking EV on the road in my opinion. Taking everything else out of the equation this is the 2nd best-looking EV that I have seen so far.

Why would any American buy a Chinese made EV?

Not all Americans respect and love America, especially the younger crowd, so plenty of reasons.

Porsche Taycan?
Audi etron GT?
Lotus Evija?
Aspark Owl?
Rimac Nevera?
Jaguar iPace?

Not every electric car looks like an egg.

Not one of those being less than $85k. You can do a lot for $100k

I don’t really see how spec wise this is better than a MME GTPE, probably costs more. Yes, it’s unlikely to have a 5 second limitation of full power. Targeted 350 mile WTLP is roughly 263 EPA. 3.8 sec 0-62 mph is pretty much the same thing as the GTPE (0-60 in 3.7 real world tested and confirmed without roll out). I’ll take the GTPE, the P4 isn’t convincing.

Didn’t know there was a price limit on “the best looking EV on the road.”
I understand your point, but the Rimac and the Aspark are so unobtainable they might as well not exist. I’ll likely never see either of them in real life. Let’s just say the MME is the best looking EV under 100k. Fair?
