I would really love to see an OTA that only addresses specific bugs, no new features. And I would really love those bug fixes to be listed out like Apple does with iOS. For instance:
  • Fixes an issue for some drivers where the rear hatch randomly opens for no reason
  • Fixes an issue for some drivers where a profile is loaded but the profile image does not display correctly
  • Fixes an issue where the rear passenger door may not open unless a front door is opened first
Just knock out a few of these at a time over the course of a couple months. I think it would go a long way. It’s not as sexy but it is needed. Connecting to public WiFi does nothing for me.

There's absolutely nothing abnormal about watching YouTube cat videos, no matter where you are at at the time.
Unless you're of the canine persuasion. Then it's called stalking. ??

You could have simply said you don't understand how traffic flows. SSL does nothing for you when you're securely connected to the malicious actor, or SSL has been filtered and the device reverts to no encryption.
Ok tbh I couldn’t parse your wall of text and rambling about this

That's strange, there were phantom tailgate openings on F150s. Their fix was to require all means of opening them require TWO presses of the button.
Button in the cab? 2 presses
Key fob? 2 presses
Button on the tailgate.... 2 damn presses.

Perhaps I'm misinterpreting, but it sounds like you believe Ford knows the cause of and solution to these issues. I'm not sure that's the case.

Gotta make sure you aren’t using wireless CarPlay, because that uses the Wi-Fi connection. Go to phone settings on the car and turn off wireless projection. It’s not a Ford issue it’s just how wireless CarPlay works.

This assumes the client (vehicle) is not compromised, or that any data that is being transmitted to Ford is encrypted at rest and in transit. It does not even have to be WiFi that causes trouble. Bluetooth can as well.

There is a lot of data that can be captured by Ford and can probably be associated with you by merely logging in with your account.

  • Home location
  • Email address
  • WiFi SSIDs and passwords
  • Ford account info

Bad actors are often after bits of information about people, that they can then associate with other information they've gathered to make it easier to steal identity info, etc. Hit up have i been pwned and enter an email address. High chance it's out there. I am incredibly careful, and all my active email addresses have been found via breaches over the years.

Connecting to any public WiFi without a VPN is not a good idea. Install DuckDuckGo's browser and enable App Tracking Protection on your phone. It'll show you what data is being shared with whom. Over the past 7 days, across 38 applications installed on my phone, there have been 286,713 tracking attempts. The data includes my name, email address, home address, IP info, app usage information, etc. If I am not blocking those attempts, I am trusting that the information is being secured on my phone and when it's sent to whomever is tracking, and that they're keeping it secure when they receive it.

TLDR; Unless SYNC is also acting as a VPN or routing traffic through some secure service (and they very well might be,) I'd be hesitant on connecting to rando public WiFi.
Good info but wrt network traffic, has anyone done packet analysis (i.e. Wireshark) to confirm if all traffic in/out of it is SSL and/or if an apparent VPN might be in play? I'm guessing no on the VPN, at least for non-ford services like video streaming, simply because that's extra cost another thing they'd have to support.

Side note: I've never been a big DuckDuckGo fan. Their search results never have seemed up to par for me and the news last spring that they were purposely giving client tracking info to MSFT confirmed my suspicions that it's probably not the privacy panacea they make themselves out to be (at least on the mobile browsers). https://techcrunch.com/2022/05/24/ddg-microsoft-tracking-blocking-limit/

LOOK OUT!! Common sense alert!! Ford please hire this person.

With several bugs and customers with features missing or broken.. there is absolutely no way resources should be put into "public wifi". You're absolutely correct. Ford needs to take a step back... Catch everyone up on firmware (that's out of control too) and correct issues. How this software rolls out is a huge black eye vs. competition. It's WAY out of step with how updates should work on any device.

Love people chiming who have no idea how software dev works, especially for devices that could kill people if something went wrong comparing it to an iPhone
