Ah...yes I see. I'll be sure to test my theory and if I can get it complimentary!
I walked in and set my X-Plan paper down, and then set my FOB down. The salesman did tell me that programming a FOB was the service department's realm and there would be a small cost. I did not try very hard to negotiate it to be free, as I was saving my negotiation "chits" for the rest of the deal. The salesman did walk us over to service and told them I was taking delivery, so I'm not sure that $85 was a special rate or a normal rate. Regardless, I had already decided before going to pick up my car that if they charged for programming and if it was less than $100 I'd take it. That said, I'm very happy and satisfied with $85. I've had extra keys made / FOBS programmed many times before and it is usually in the $150 range (for just the programming, and then you still have to buy the key / FOB)

Ordered mine for $89.99 from https://www.carandtruckremotes.com/2021-ford-mustang-electric-smart-remote-4b.html where they say they have more than 10 left. During checkout, was offered 10% discount to be automatically applied at checkout if completed within 10 minutes, but it was not, so I have sent a message to their customer support. Hoping to program it myself.

I just ordered one here also. Tried the Capitol One Coupon thing on google and it found me a 15% off code. With shipping and tx it was $85.01. Numbers all matched the factory fobs people are getting. My local locksmith says he can program for $50 after he updates his software next week.

I just ordered one and found a 15% off coupon code DEALER, hope it can be programmed at the dealer for a relatively cheap price.
Thanks for the coupon code. I ordered mine today and the code worked. They only had 3 left before I placed my order.

I asked my dealer if they can program the key fob as part of the dealer prep since they'll have to have the car hooked up to the computer anyway for software updates. He said they can do it, but they're going to charge me $115 for an hour of labor. I'm not surprised, but really?

I took my extra fob (eBay purchase) to the dealer when they were done fixing my 12volt battery issue. I think they felt sorry for me because of all the problems with the car. They programmed the fob for $55.

If the dealership is above $100 I'm going to tell them no thanks and wait to let a locksmith do it. I don't need to do it right now, and hopefully they decide to drop the price some.

Does the dealer need the car to program the remote, or just your VIN?

Just for perspective, we used Chevy Equinoxes as towed vehicles behind our motorhome and wanted a third fob to be in the car while in tow. The extra fob averaged about $200 with the programming. True it only takes a couple of minutes but most shops, separate from sales, have an hour minimum no matter what.

Why do these things have to be so big and bulky looking. Haven't improved in 25 years.
Blame the battery size. The next challenge would to make them "contact" rechargeable. Placing it on a recharge pad in the car or home.
